I've been looking at the asus section for awhile and I see that everyone thinks the w3j model will be super good. Is it the 14' dedicated graphics with x1600(256) mb sleek gaming machine and duo core? I'm starting to look into laptops as I need one in the near future and I'd like to play games, would this be a good machine to invest in? It sure is expensive though.

With Asus ensemble units, it's all about quality over quantity. I doubt there's a 14.1" out there that comes even close to the W3J in terms of graphics power.

There are many people, myself included, looking forward to the W3j. However, no one has one yet, so it isn't definite it will be super good.

Depending on how many games you play, the W3j may be overkill. You may be able to find a less expensive Asus Ensemble or BTO model that will fit your needs.

The Acer TravelMate 3280 could be a contender even though it's 'only' a X1400. It's predecessor the 3220 sold very well in Europe. Not as nice as a W3, but it was/is more than 25% cheaper for the same spec. and it had a X700 over the Asus' X600.

I'll be buying it in the summer. Primarily it's going to be used for school (Autocad , Office), hardcore gaming on the side, and the occasional streaming video

The $1799 price is is nowhere near expensive, it's a really reasonable price for a system of such caliber!

The X1600's 3dmark score is about 2X that of the X700. Also the X1600 isn't even comparable to the X1400...

    x1400:
    Pixel Pipes 4
    Vertex Shaders 2

    X1600:
    Pixel Pipes 12
    Vertex Shaders 5

Well, yes. But I believe that many will deem X700-like performance (of which the X1400 should be in the same ballpark, a bit slower but with added SM3) is sufficient for 1280x768. Also the X1600 doesn't have more ROPs than the X1400, so the fillrate will be the same per clock and not all games are shading limited. Anyway, as I said: Not as nice as the W3, but I expect it to be much cheaper and to do well.

BTW: Is the $1799 price point confirmed for the US W3J? Better than I thought it would be. Good choice on the graphics card by Asus as I think the X600 caused them some sales vs. Acer last gen. I expected the upcoming refresh to be a X1300, but am glad to be wrong on that. Personally I'm still happy with my W3N. We'll see if the upgrade itch manifests itself come spring.
