How does laptops cooling in Asus mainstream 15.4/14'(with integrated or lite GPU like ati200m etc) work?

    I mean -
1.Does it start when POST for a few seconds?
    2. Under load of up to 80% max CPU is fan working? Or is fan working from the beginning slowly inaudible, and then goes to next gear when heat is let's say about 60% of max heat power, and finally under full torture test cpu it goes like a hair blower and you can hear it from 2 m? Or maybe even when working at 90-95% of full load cpu it is still just quiet you must stick your ear to air vent to hear it?

How does it behave ? Still spining with many speeds or juzt blowing for a while with high speed to cool down and again again.. which is annoying for me..

    1. Yes it goes full-blast for a few seconds during POST (annoying in quiet environments like classrooms, conference rooms)

    2. The fan has different gears that it goes through as the temperature increases. At full blast, you can probably hear it from 2m on most models. It's not quite as a hair blower, though :)

But with a bit of undervolting, I managed to avoid my fan ever going full blast, instead on torture tests it stays on the second or third step from the top which is much quieter.

    3. The hysteresis is well-designed in most notebooks. That is, it won't go high speed for a few seconds, then move down again, then up again. So that annoying behavior is not present.

It can appear if the fan is clogged with dust. With a clean fan, I only noticed it this behavior on an A6 low-price entry-level model.

I must say my W3J with ATIx1600 and 2.33ghz T7600 works really well, when I upgraded the CPU I used the best thermal compound available and that helps, most of the time the fan is on and CPU is around 55-60deg, in a normal room with ambient noise, it is barely audible.

when playing games or encoding video where the cpu is loaded the fan kicks in, but like EBE mentions it is quite rational, normal use = nice and quiet, when you load it up the fan kicks in, once you stop it quietens down again.

Well, I get - after using Arctic Silver 5 and undervolting - on Fujitsu with Turion 1,8Ghz (35W) temperatures on full load like 49C max, on idle at 35-9C. But fan kicks in when cpu is 100% loaded and temp is above ca.47C and spins untli temp drops to 41-2C. When cpu is not fully loaded fan could even start just for seconds after 1 h period. But this is only with www/office, and when streamingvideo like youtube "comes to the game" it starts using 100% cpu and fan spins at its 1 gear which is really fast and noisy when sitting in silent room, 2 gear is too audible and can hear even from 4m( but I obtained this 2 gear only when it had original cheap thermal compund and standard volatages ( standard temps were: load -up to 65C, idle 45).
There is ati 200M - cause I am using this laptop for office /business applictions.
And as it is not for gaming, and I am really pissed of with the noise and speed I currently dont need !. 15cm back from air vent air is not hot but little warm.

So it has this not nice behaviour that fan is trying to lower temp but fast spinning and when cpu must be 100% loaded all the time it is loud, on the other hand, with cpu less than 100% usage - it is inaudible (fan is off).

Now I am trying to slow down fan.

edited - I have cut some less important functions in applications I use, and now they dont need 100% cpu, so fan starts occasionally.

I suggest trying a different BIOS, sometimes thermal policies are changed / tweaked in different BIOS versions.

    yeah???
So is it as quiet as let's say.. modern PSU with 12cm fans ? Can You hear just a whisper , lite blowing when full load CPU? I dont believe you that core 2 duo in 12'chasis is silent.

The core 2 duo are pretty cool already. And I believe the U6 even uses the smaller-than-mobile core 2 duo wich are even cooler.

I have a E4500 in my C90S and it's silet much of the time, even while gaming it's not really loud.

well, I did some research - u6 seems to be upper class so may be better quality, but it is always one factor - lack of space for bigger heat sinks.

smaller than mobile core2 duo ? , something new? new cpu? I know that there is c2d extreme ...
