I just installed the new 7,200 RPM, 200 GB Hitachi hard disc in my G1s. I did not do any benchmarking with the original equipment disc and I have not done any with the new one either. The only comparison I can make is the Vista Experience Index. It went from 4.8 (which seems to be what everyone gets with the stock disc) to 5.4 with the new disc. By comparison, I believe I have seen review of the G1s with the new Seagate 160 GB, 7,200 RPM drive and it gets a VEI of 4.9. Thus, the Hitachi looks faster on this benchmark.

It was an easy install. The hardest part was finding software that would clone my original hard disc accurately. I tried Acronis and it reported success, but the new drive would not boot. I finally downloaded Casper and it worked perfectly. Also, the cloning process was quick using the ESATA interface and an external enclosure. Much faster than USB.

The new disc seems to run more quietly than the original and no hotter.

First, how much did the whole end up costing you? What are you going to do with your old hard drive, sell it or get an enclosure for storage?

The new drive cost about $240 with shipping and tax. I already had an external ESATA/USB enclosure. Back when I bought it, it cost about $30.

I have not decided what to do with the old drive. Unfortunately, this is something of a habit with me. I have a drawer full of old hard drives ranging in size from 100 GB to 250 GB in both 3.5" and 2.5" form factors. If you know someone who wants to buy old drives, please let me know ;-)

Well, I will need an external hard drive for backups and data storage but I have yet to buy my notebook yet. I will let you know if I need a hard drive. Thanks.

Also, do you think you could list exactly what hard drives you have if it isn't too much of an inconvience?
