I updated my W2J's BIOS using the Winflash tool and after rebooting I can't get into setup! It's prompting me for a password. Before flashing I had a password but that password isn't working now!

Anyone? Is there a default password or something? This is ridiculous. Why would it add a password after updating the BIOS?

I'd like to reflash but I can't via Winflash. How do I flash outside of Windows without a floppy drive?

you can flash using a cd, but thenyou can't make a backup of the bios you're currently running. and i've heard of alot of people having this problem when they flash their bios -- laptop and desktop systems.

Had a very similar problem with a Dell I used to have, wayy back. Had BIOS password, updated BIOS...had new password?! WTF, right.

You can probably flash through CD - I did mine through a floppy. Sorry that I wasn't of any help.

Glad to see it's common at least. I e-mailed Asus but probably won't hear back for a week.

One thing to clarify, the computer does not go past the BIOS unless you have a password, or it boots fine but doesn't let you access BIOS setup?

If you have a usb stick, maybe this can help?

Every time it boots it has a checksum error and tells me to press F2 to enter setup or F1 to load setup defaults. Either leads to a password prompt. 3 wrong entries goes straight to Windows.

It's a setup password, but to enter setup or load setup defaults it requires a password.

**** you Asus! I unscrewed some of the casing and managed to reach in and unplug the CMOS battery. Left it that way for a few minutes and plugged it back in. PASSWORD STILL THERE!

LOL. Usually on desktop computers there's a jumper to short/reset the BIOS, taking out the CMOS battery doesn't always do it.

You probably did this by now, but, take out the CMOS battery as well as the laptop battery, let it sit for half an hour, then turn it on with ac adapter and see if that knocks it out.

I think though, the password might still be there because of the checksum error, the BIOS may have corrupted and thats why taking out the battery isn't resetting the 'password' which really isn't there at all.

I reflashed the BIOS with an older version and the password is still there. On my desktop when I reflash the BIOS I also get a checksum error after rebooting. It's just a normal thing. Need to go into setup and load the defaults.

    stupid question
if you leave password blank what happens?
on the reverse there is a little hole. Take a paperclip and hold that in for 10 sec. Any change?

Nope. Tried leaving it blank and just a bunch of other "default" passwords. I held the little button for 10 seconds and nothing changed.

Wow Asus has great customer service

I e-mailed them last night and just got a response. It told me to call them and gave the number. I had called that number earlier and the guy said he'd call back. I called again hoping to get a different agent. Same guy. Apparently there's only 1 notebook tech support person

No there are quite a few there. You want to speak to Albert. Its a hit or miss you just called during peak hours. Needless to say good dealer warranty is always better, :)

Alright so he called me back... conveniently right before closing. Won't be open until Wednesday. They needed a copy of my invoice. Sent that over. Wish me luck!

I called them again today and Albert told me he would e-mail me some info if he can find it... I really hate how informal Asus' tech support is. They make great products but customer service is another thing. Let's hope I get this problem solved this month.

Fixed it! Got an e-mail from Albert with some possible passwords and one of them worked. Apparently the password changes daily. Pretty good security.
