Hey guys i have an Asus Z70VA and in it i have a Hitachi 5400RPM 60gig hard drive. This drive has always seemed to run quite warm and 60 gigs is just not seeming like enough space right now. So im thinking of upgrading to at least a 100gig hard drive. Do you guys have any recomendations on which hard drive to upgrade to. One thats performance and preferably heat output is less than this one because i also believe the heat of this HD is increasing the overal temp of my entire system.

Better performance and equal or less heat = Seagate 7200.1

Sure speed got for a 7200, but I have a Seagate 5400.3 160gb drive, very good, check out the reviews, also you can buy them from Dell for approx $170-190incl post + tax USD I got two, two weeks ago, including postage cost was $390.

Although I am considering upgrading to a 7200...

I lot of people are really happy with the new PMR (perpindicular magnetic recording) drives (might be the one that NZwaverider is talking about) THey get better performance and density than standard 5400 RPM drives, and performance close to a 7200, without the heat and they use less power.

Well, both Seagate (I think) and Hitachi both have perpendicular HDD, so it up to you if you still want Hitachi or switch to Seagate.

Yeah the one I have is the seagate, I am really pleased with it, when it was first installed my W3J would fully boot in 30sec!

When I was looking around for drives a month ago, Seagate are the company who developed the Perpendicular writing technology (thats not to say Hitachi have not followed), but I havent seen any Hitachi Drives using that technology, but they may have done.

You can find some really good reviews on Line, even detailing power usage for idle read and write, so if you doa bit of research it is easy to make an informed decision, I actually saw a review that rated one of the Hitachi 7200 drives faster than the 7200 seagate model (but that was amonth ago)

Anyhow from what I read up on the Seagate 5400.3 Perpendicular series of drives are one of the fastest 5400 drives around at the moment.

I would like to get a 7200rpm drive to improve disc intensive work, i.e. audio editing, encoding.... but at the moment I am used to having 160gb space which is great, going back to 100gb drive might be a bit of a tight squeeze :D

Ive heard that 7200 drives are alot noisier, hotter and use up alot more power too. Maybe ill look into that seagate 160gig 5400RPM drive. Cant seem to find it on the canadian dell site ill check out ncix and see if they carry it thanks guys.

oh another thing hehe any way of transfering whats on this HD to a new HD and can i use this HD kinda like a backup??? I think 5400 of this model would probably be my best choise as i use this for school alot and battery performance matters so if its running at performance levels close to a reg 7200 but uses less power then a reg 5400 im sure this would be the right drive. $270 for the 160gig at my local store (thats canadian).

when it comes to hitachi vs seagate, hitachi tend to do better for straight file copy speed, and are a bit louder, but the seagates do better for general read/wright I/O use and have longer warranties.

Having said that I've seen a few benchmarks of newer SATA 5400rpm Seagates taking the PATA 7200 hitachi's out..

I'd go with a new seagate 7200... I'm glad I got a 7200 one... You really can feel the fifference.

you can always get a 2.5" USB2 / firewire case and put your old one in if you want storage.

If I remember correctly the z70-series has a modular bay. If you get the secondary hard drive modular bay caddy.. you can add or remove the storage whenever you want.

If you want a decent and cheap solution, look around for a Western Digital external hard drive with firewire. I've seen deals recently that bring 160 Gig and 250 Gig HDD's (with enclosure and some with USB hubs too!) to $50 and $90 respectively. Store your MP3's and media files on the external HDD, and games/performance apps on your internal HDD.

Canadian_mofo, you should check out a retailer called infonec. They have that drive (Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST9160821A - hard drive - 160 GB - ATA-100) for $212 Canadian. They're Ontario based.

They have an online site as well...It's www.infonec.ca
I hope that helps. If you're willing to spend that kinda money, I'd say It's the best mobile drive on the market right now in the 5400RPM range. Good luck :)

As far as I can tell, none of those things are true. I have a Hitachi 7K100 80GB in my 12" Z33Ae and I have no heat/noise/power issues with it at all. Acoustic mode quiet, spin-down never for AC and 2 minutes for DC.

I have seen several reviews of the 7200RPM laptop drives where there was little to no heat difference and maybe 5-10 minutes battery life difference between the 5400 and the 7200.

I second that. I don't have a 7200 rpm drive, but I have read at least a few other people on here who have them saying they experienced minimal battery life, noise and heat issues.

I'd like one, but I'm not sure 120GB is enough... :)
