So tonight I finally got my HDMI cable in from newegg (took almost a week, which is strange) and I decide to go over to my girlfriend's house and use her plasma + my laptop to watch some hi-def movies with the external xbox 360 HD DVD drive. To my surprise, i plug it in, see the picture, but hear no sound. Well, there was some sound, but it was a strange crackling. I need to know what was happening, how to fix it, or what to buy asap. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Somewhat pointless, but many laptops don't carry audio over HDMI. Which is stupid.

well i heard crackling when i moved the mouse and i opened the start menu. It seemed like it was crackling when the hard drive spun. But i don't know if it's just a coincidence

classic mode: control panel- Sound- Select realtek digital output- set default.

You may need to update the drivers, but this should send audio over hdmi along with video.

I actually have tried that with no success. The same crackling sound occurs, it could just be the TV I guess, but it's less than a year old so I don't think that it's that way.

Weird, when I switched over on my G1s, my Samsung DLP did display the sound. Doesn't matter that much until I get my 1.3 HDMI Onky or Denon setup in a few months really.

I assumed that the HDMI port on the g1s didn't carry audio but after reading this thread I decided to try it out and setting digital out as default in the RealTek control panel and to my surprise I did get audio out via HDMI.

The only issue I was having was that I wasn't getting audio out while playing a DVD, either in Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center. Although I could get music to play through my tv speakers in Media Center. Now I was using my Xbox 360's HD DVD drive which hooks up via USB 2 so maybe that was the cause? I didn't try the internal DVD drive bit I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

How exactly do you set it to digital out? Does it become an option when you have the HDMI plugged in? I've messed around with it a couple times with no real progress. I've set the output to the digital part in the sound menu, but is there anything more to it?

I managed to get audio out even during DVD playback on my G1S over HDMI. The one thing I noticed is that you have to switch over to the digital out in the RealTek control panel before starting say our media player or whatever app. It should be the first thing you do after hooking up the HDMI cable.

Hey guys thanks for answering a question I was going to ask in a new thread haha. I was still a bit "iffy" whether or not this laptop of mine could carry audio via HDMI.

I just need to go out and get a cable which is good to hear. I have an HDTV i'd love to hook this up to once and a while.
