ok, so I'm a bit unclear about the SATA interface. As far I know, I have IDE and SATA appears as something I need to hook up to the rear of my laptop through some special cable. Or can I just hook it up thinking it connects to the same as the IDE?

Is this true? I'd like a solid 7200RPM HD with maybe ~100gigs. Any suggestions?

I see in my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers it says for one of them...

    Intel(R) 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage controller - 27C4

So obviously I can do something with SATA, but I don't know if it's what I'm thinking above or just install it as I have my other HD.

The ASUS Z96j has an 80GB 7200rpm 8mb Seagate SATA drive.

The new sata drive will fit inside of your laptop with no extra cables required just like your old one.

You could get something like a 500GB Samsung - HM500LI 5400 RPM or a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB with the faster 7200 RPM.

Just make sure any drive you get is 2.5 and not 3.5.

If 100 GB is really enough then you could get something like a Seagate Momentus 100GB 7200 RPM. You might want to take a look at the different RPMs, cache sizes and manufacturer before purchasing any new drive.

I have been using 5400 RPM Sata drives in my Asus Laptop with no problems. If you want more information on the pros and cons of 5400 vs 7200 there are many previous threads discussing this.

I am assuming you want to use the new one to replace the internal one but you can also use it externally or you can clone your current hard disk onto a new one.
