I dont think quad works in any of the lineups. A bios update is supposed to enable quad support.

All the G71 series support quad cores without the need of a bios update.

munchkin-man, I think you're referring to the Best Buy G51Vx version.

bestbuy g51 has the same bios as the rest of the g51s on newegg doesn't it? I thought that asus was going to release the G51s to manufacturers such as xotic pc and such with a new bios and then release an update for the rest. I had no idea for the G71 though.

Yes, but the OP was referring to the G71Gx as stated in the title thread.

I hope so, but i wont believe it until i have a confirmation from someone whos actually taken the financial risk of trying a quad in it, if so thats great.

ALSO if anyone knows, im still looking for proof that the g71gx-rx05 from best buy can handle 12 gigs of ram not just 6 (asus and best buy say 6 is the max)..... cause ddr2 prices are dropping faster than ever now with ddr3 taking over, and 12 gigs of ram would just make me happy (i know its unnecessary, but by then i'll be doing photoshop work on two monitors with it probably, and more doesnt kill ya haha)

I heard somewhere that you can load up 12 gigs in a G50 so why not a G51 and G71...That is a theory though..

G51 only has 2 RAM slots so it would probably be 8GB max.
G71 has 3 RAM slots so it should be able to support 12GB

Ken Lee at one point posted that the G71Gs can support up to 12gb.
