    Hi
I bought this machine last november and it have been running mostly without problems, but that has changed as of the last month. I have never moved the laptop away from the desk it is sitting on now.

    Issue 1

Once in a while, maybe a few times a week, the screen starts "flickering" so you cannot see what is shown on the screen and it does not stop before I start turning the screen back and forth. Sometimes it is also hard to get the flickering to stop. I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware problem.

    Issue 2

Today the fan started making an annoying mechanical? sound that is there constantly. I know others have had similar problems with the fan. Is this causing damage to the fan? Will Asus change the fan or just fix it? Can I fix it myself?

    Issue 3

Lately, the machine for no apparent reason, suddenly turns itself of. I think it only has happened when I'm running games. Could the machine be overheating?

    Issue 4

Sometimes when I make the machine go into sleep mode, the screen is turned of, but the machine is still on and nothing more happens. Is this just an error in Windows ?

Any help on these issues would be appreciated!

I've never experienced a laptop with this many problems before. Is this normal with this type of a laptop?

I guess I will have to send the machine to Asus now that the fan noise has started..

    1. Try updating your graphics driver from laptopvideo2go or directly from nvidia's website. It's most likely just a software issue

    2. Call asus and ask them to send you a free fan replacement. Some of the earlier G71G units have a faulty fan which tend to vibrate violently for no apparent reason.

    3. It could be an overheating issue. Are you overclocking your GPU? Check your GPU load temps with RivaTuner.

    4. I'm not exactly sure about this issue, but have you installed all the important windows updates?

im having the first issue too, it happens every once in a while but it stops by itself after a couple of seconds. Im using the 179.48 drivers from nvidia.com, are the drivers from laptopvideo2go better?

Newer drivers may provide more stability. It never hurts to try :)

David means you'd change vidio driver such as 180 or 182.Maybe its better in more powerful laptop.Im using 180.70!

Well, depending on the operating system the OP is using. I'm assuming he's using Vista 64bit in which case, the newest graphics driver as of today is 179.47.
Nividia's driver version numbering system is not so intuitive such that a higher version number may not necessarily be newer.

Asus will send me a new fan. Can anyone tell me if it's hard to install it on my own?

It's not hard at all. All it takes is to unscrew a few screws.

With my existing fan the GPU have reached more than 100 degrees celsius while playing games. Could this damage the GPU?

In the long run, yes. 100+C is high and should be avoided if possible.

Did you get a fan replacement from Asus yet?

Have you cleaned it with compressed air? Mine used to get almost 96C then after cleaning the dust the max I get is 87C

If your gpu is overheating that explains the fan noise and vibration. When I play Assassin's Creed my fan will start to vibrate a little, sort of in a rhythm. I logged my gpu at 85C. I think that 9 series gpus are designed to go up to 105C before reaching critical state but no way is that normal for gaming. 80-90C is about normal. Try applying arctic silver 5 compound onto your cpu and gpu, maybe your cooling compound dried off. Its about $5 on newegg for a small amount you need, worth a shot.

I haven't tried doing anything with the fan myself. Vibrations and noise from the fan only occurs right after boot up and last for maybe an hour - After that it acts just like normal.

Well I seem to have found the cause of the overheating. There was a thick layer of dust on the side of the heat sink. The GPU now runs at around 75C during games.

Yeah, dust and lint usually accumulates on the fan blades and heat grill/spreaders first. The grills are usually harder to reach and often require you to take the fan out first for proper cleaning.

I'm glad everything worked out for you. :)
