I'm looking to buy a new laptop and i have been looking at G71GX and the G51VX. i was wondering what is your guys opinion on which one is better for the price. i was think about getting the G71Gx for the extra hd space and just the little specs that are better than the G51 but does this really increase performance that much?

    basically the same idea :D

for only a hundred more the g71gx is a MUCH better deal IMO.2 more gigs of ram, more space, better resolution, and most importantly 2.53 GHz compared to 2.0 GHz, which is quite a big difference. The only thing the G51gx has against the G71gx is a lit keyboard.

I dislike 17-inchers, so I stuck with the G51. Also, I really, really like the new keyboard, backlight and all.

The G51 does run a bit hotter than the G71gx, but not dangerously so.

Gaming performance is about the same, since the P7350 vs the P8700 aren't bottlenecks in a gaming environment. The G71gx will clearly score higher on 3DMark06, however.

Hard drive space is easily, easily upgradeable. It also does not void your warranty to install a second hard drive. (I have two 320 GBs in my G51)

RAM is reasonably easy to upgrade, but it's very expensive. The G51 can max out at 8 GB, while hte G71gx can take 12.

G71gx does have a higher resolution screen than the G51.

The G51 has a much flashier cover than the G71gx, so it's "Boom!" versus conservatism.

There were BIOS issues with the G71gx, but I think they're all corrected now. If not, it's easy to fix.

Not really an answer to "which is better", but I hope it points you in the right direction.

IMO, its really more of whether you want a 17 inch laptop for you and aesthetics.

If it isn't too big or heavy for you, go for the G71 unless you REALLY like backlit keyboards or hate the way the G71 looks.

This may not be too relevant in the decision, but are you going to use the extra hdd space? If you don't have lots of movies and stuff in your hdd and if you don't need big chunks for design or video editing than 320GB will be enough I think.

nwaiting for the a1s.....the bb versions r just feels like a unwanted child of Asus ( no offence but rather put whatever you can fit in there @ a reasonable price ....the 1366 display is just plain waste for the 260m ..-_-)

Personally, I prefer the lower res screen, purely from a performance standpoint. The 1080 screen is prettier, but you're going to kill your framerate and you wont be able to keep your settings nearly as high on that resolution, unless you get a good quad core processor and a game that can utilize all four cores.

I'd like the 1080 screen for the operating system, web browsing, and basic applications, but for gaming I'd always drop down anyway, so the screen is definitely not a worry for me. The only downside I see to the Best Buy version is the lower end dual core processor. I would have been much happier if it came stock with the 8600 or something, and would have been willing to pay the hundred dollar difference.
