Hey guys. I like the price on this laptop and the reviews sound good.

I have an extra 320GB 7200 RPM Hard drive (from my G50VT-X6) that I would like to put inside this computer. Is there an extra bay in which I can install it?

    Thanks.

cool. thanks. Is there anything else I need to know about this laptop? There is so much stuff written on this forum and it's hard to sift through it all. My guess is that it's gonna be almost identical in form to the G50vt-x6 that I already have. The only differences I see are in internal hardware and the new back light keyboard.

Something I hate about the G50... the keyboard sucks. Sometimes it doesn't register keys properly when I type on it. I hope the G51JX doesn't have this problem

The funny thing is that my G50 does not have the Keyboard lag.....
BTW it does not have the awesome little OLED screen.

Hold on a sec - this is the G51JX-X3 - where are you getting the data that it has an extra hard drive bay? The Amazon site does not say it, and the Amazon listing itself gives incorrect information anyway, for example:

"500GB 7,200RPM hard drives" (why is it plural if it's just one?)
"With a 3DMark score of 11,000+" (more like 9,500 at stock clocks and even slightly less with the weaker CPU)

The specs for the G51JX-X3 are like the G51JX-A1 - just a bad copy of G51J-A1 specs with a couple of changes which weren't done well at all, as I mentioned in the G51JX-A1 thread.

I'm not saying it is impossible that the G51JX-X3 is different from every other JX model, but either way don't get the drive caddy until you get the system and open it up to see if there is space. The JX series in general has 4 slots for DDR3 memory instead of 2 of the J (something else Amazon got wrong in both the G51JX-A1 and G51JX-X3 pages) and those two slots replace the extra HDD space. I suspect if you open it up you'll find 2 empty RAM slots rather than space for another HDD.

Thanks CCz Cataphract. That's precisely what I was wondering. Some people say that it does have the extra bay, some say that it doesn't. We need a person who's actually bought the G51JX-X3 from Amazon to let us know...

Exactly - so far I can't find any definitive info on it, no reviews and nothing much to go on about it really. I actually just spent a few minutes trying to tell someone on Yahoo Answers who asked about it, the same thing.

The G51Jx-A1 is a known quantity (and you can see my review or the G51JX-A1 thread for tons more info) - but the X3 is still a big question mark at the moment.

    Hi guys,

I picked up an X3 at the beginning of last week. So far I have not has any issues with it. I plan on throwing up a review when I get some time (Which I haven't had much of lately). I haven't even opened up the bottom yet to see if you can fit a 2nd drive. CCz is probably completely right in this regard.

So far though no BSODs. Been playing Mass Effect 2 at 1080 for a couple of hours and nothing yet.

How many G73JH's are there? At last count there was A1, A2, X1, X2 and now a X3? Is this just stores putting their own numbers and letters at the end to make them unique to the store to avoid price matching?

Not in this case. This is about the G51Jx series and the A1 is the premier top of the line laptop with as many extras as they give: an i7 and a free mouse and backpack, X1 does not come with mouse and backpack and the X3 has an i5 processor instead of i7.

There are other differences, but those are some of the basics.

Anyways, it hasn't bluescreened ... but all I've played is left4dead, so ...

Badaboom AND left for dead didn't manage to get it above 83 over the last hour, no throttling either - still, I've got to dig up one of the bluescreen games to test, but so far it's looking good.

What other games are you planning on testing? I have a slew I can try out. So far ME2 and L4D are out. Guess that is a good thing so far. I put another couple of hours into ME2 last night and no issues to report.

@hijackthepants: What's the max temp your gpu has hit? Mine makes it to 91 now, but the fan brings it to 88 consistently. I idle at around 70.

Also, there is only room for ONE hard drive and TWO slots for ram (not 4).

I'm planning on testing Civ4 and borderlands (whenever that's done downloading).

Since all the JX's have 4 ram slots, does that mean all JX's are expandable to 16 GB?

The pics of the X3 in particular show the RAM slots are in the same positions as the JX - but instead of being 2 tall, each only holds one module instead. So there is only 2 slots in this model.

It's too bad, since then they could have just made it like a regular J and had the extra spot for the HDD - but the motherboard doesn't have a connector for it there so this gives them an excuse not to have one. The X3 is the lower end cheaper model and it shows in this unfortunately.

It's got decent sound quality for a laptop. A little quiet, and lacking some bass ... but it's a laptop, and I've had better AND worse in my laptops.

    GPU/CPU temps under load - 87/60ish
    GPU/CPU temps idle - 60-70/50ish

I use mine without a cooler, as well. I didn't see a huge decrease in temps with the cooler, although my cooler is just a few case fans I stuck together and raised a little for airflow.

If the description says it has a mouse / backpack and they don't provide you with one, they'll knock another 10% off on delivery.

Ill get mine in 2 weeks approx. I'm concerned about GPU temps. Are there any intake holes for the GPU? If there aren't any, it might be worth drilling a few holes and using a cooler imo, what do u think?

Received my laptop this weekend. I'm having some freezing issues... please see my other thread for this issue: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=469689

I also never received a mouse and backpack with the computer and it specifically says that it comes with one on the amazon item description. I will be filing a complaint.

Still, it's a good laptop. I like the feel of it. Hopefully my issues get resolved. They've also bumped down the price of the laptop by another 30 bucks to $1049.99

Its not a kind of laptop which you can carry into board room and many are complaining about BSOD, though the price is tempting for the configurations.

Here's the specs which you can't find from amazon (per the X3 which arrived today):
    HD: 500gb 7200rpm - Seagate ST9500420AS
    Bluetooth: Broadcom BT-253
    DVD: TS-L633C
Card Reader: Ricoh PCIe of some vintage
    Wired Network: Atheros AR8131 PCIe
Wireless: Intel WifiLink 1000 BGN (everything in the 2.4ghz realm)
    Firewire: Ricoh-based chipset
Ram: two sticks of Asus (ASU1333DS3S9DR8/2G) special part number Kingston memory. I believe the kingston part number is: KVR1333D3S9/2G

Initial thoughts: very good build quality compared, quiet, decent overall.

Cons so far: the gloss cover looks great but attracts finger prints like no other :p The right-shift key is very small causing the up-arrow to be pressed a bit, there is a little bit of flex on the keyboard near the F5/F6 area......otherwise good.

    Overall: very happy with it.

Yeah it comes with 6 cell. Not sure about the battery life I never take it off power supply. So far it runs every game I throw at it fine. No heat issues at all even when on my lap.
There is one problem though...does anyone else have issues with getting the hdmi output to work properly? It recognizes tv and I set the 2nd monitor to 720p like the tv and hit the function button to use a second monitor or display and nothing happens.

    So another question:
The difference between the 4 G51Jx models I have seen here:
    A1 - i7, 16GB RAM max, backpack, mouse
    X1 - same, but w/o backpack/mouse
    X2 - i7, 8GB RAM max
    X3 - i5, 8GB RAM max

    True?

I'm getting around 2 hours with the brightness turned down and backlit on with wireless and browsing around online.

Finished installing CS:S last night and did some testing. After two hours of playing I received no lockups/freezing. The laptop was ok temp wise from the left side of the touch pad going to the right. To the left of that it's warmer, I had left good airflow around this area and didn't have any issues, thought I would suspect if the airflow around here is restricted it would cause overheating to possibly occur.

FPS wise I was running Source (under win7 64-bit running the nvidia 8.16.11.8766 drivers) with 1920x1080 @32bit with the default graphics options for the GPU...everything maxed with the exception of AA set to MSAA 4x and filtering to Antisoptric 4x which resulted in 120 to 180fps on dust2 with 20+ people on it.

They are slightly different configurations cpu, ram, hard drive, wireless card and extra accessories vary between the different models though I have also noticed that certain models are available only through certain vendors.

Hi all. Someone with the G51JX-X3, not A1 can you please tell me if the horizontal light strip on the bottom of the logo lights up? The A1 it does not because I hear that Asus did not put a cable in there. So, G51JX-X3 horizontal light lights up? Thanks.
