Is it possible for me to upgrade my GTX 260m to a 5870 ATI M card. I would like to get my hands on one from the g73 from a reseller and try and see if it will work with my g51. It is MXM 3.0b and runs cooler than the gtx 260m so it should work.

What do you guys think. And if it might be possible to install it where can i get one from.

    No.

    The MXM is not compatible.

Then what card can i upgrade to later on. Which card is better than my 260m and will allow me to upgrade it.

does the 280 / 285m work? I'm not familiar with the differences but mayb it will work because they're both Nvidia?

you can not use any other card just the one that it came with. you can not even use the 360 even though it looks identical

    1. I heard they modified the dimensions of the 260 card to fit in the G51.
    2. So its not MXM compatable.

    Are 1 & 2 correct ?

Is that why the 360 ( for example ) would not work ?

MXM is a standard rarely followed to spec. a lot of manufacturers change it to their liking (with the exception of some boutique notebooks, eg. alienware and clevo, and even then only for a single generation or two). theres a good chance asus changed the pinout of the 5870 compared to the 260/360.

as for the gts360m, i'm not so sure. between BIOS 207 (official) and 207.T10 (BSOD fix), they added what looks like the 360m vbios into the system (technical @ http://g51jbsod.wikia.com/wiki/BIOS_disassembly#VBIOS_overclock_mod). why go through the trouble of adding an EP and VBIOS that will never be used?
not that i want to find out, i don't have money or a place to get a gts360m.

Even if it will fit, you still will not be able to use it.
The vbios is a part of the notebook bios. So for the 5870 to work you will have to have it's vbios inserted into the bios of your notebook, which I think only ASUS can do.
