So i receive this G50Vt-X5 replacement instead of the G1S-B2 that i bought a year and a half ago. Received it on monday. Its thursday and the damn thing is broken. It took me a month and a half to get this replacement unit.
Here is what happened: I left the laptop sitting on my desk playing music and went out with a friend for about 2 hours. I came back and discovered that the screen is black. So i think its asleep or whatever and try to wake it up. Realize that its not. Restart. Doesn't boot past POST. Hard drive makes weird sounds. So i grab my recovery DVD. F2 @ POST to switch to DVD boot - it works. Windows wont start, tells me some crucial file is missing... what??? Ok, so i then go on to reinstall windows, everything goes well until i insert the driver DVD in, the hard drive, which was making funky noises, goes berserk and begins producing really strange noises and beeps. The laptop restarts itself a couple seconds after the hard drive began acting weird. I now can not access BIOS 50% of the time, it wont boot from hard drive OR the recovery DVD at all.
At which point did my harddrive fail four days into its magnetic life?

Hmmm a small follow up to my story.
I drove to the Asus service centre in Markham, Ontario. My hard drive was replaced without question within half an hour of my arrival.

Yea I just got my G1S-A1 replaced with a G50vt-X5 and I'm not liking the Hard Drive on it too much. I'm just waiting for Windows 7 to come out so I can pick up a new WD Scorpio Black and replace it. The Seagate drive in the laptop seems to be always active doing stuff, and it's making more noise than the spare WD that I had in my G1S. This machine is clean, as I removed everything not needed, and installed only the essentials, yet the drive is still actively seeking stuff.

Only 2 more months to go.

Thx for posting the followup - too many people around here just do complaints and then don't follow with info re: Asus' taking care of the problem.

The Markham office continues to get good marks - and HDDs do sometimes fail (rats!).
