Hello, I've been reading multiple threads about installation, but I'm not sure that this exact issue has been solved. It's been mentioned, however.

When I use my XP Pro SP2 slipstreamed CD and try to install XP on a partition already created, once XP loads all of its drivers etc, and I'm able to select to install XP, it gives me the message that there is no HDD detected. My BIOS is up to date. There is no option to switch to compatibility mode in the BIOS. I've come to the conclusion that it has to be a driver issue with XP, it's quite obvious. I'm familiar with slipstreaming, so maybe someone has a suggestion about what driver to use with the G2S-B1, hopefully. Thank you.

probably you have native sata support switched on in your bios. XP does NOT have drivers for that. you will have to slipstream the sata driver for your notebook onto your XP cd.

//edit - forgot to mention : of course you can disable native sata support in your bios. but you will probably loose some hdd performance. So better slipstream the sata driver to your XP installation cd. a good tool for that is Nlite. ""

Isn't it true that you only need to disable SATA for the duration of the install? So you will only use some performance for that duration.

Hmm... then slipstreaming is a better option indeed.

Depending also on the amount of performance increase of the native SATA mode. But I suspect that's significant.

Maybe installing SATA drivers on XP, reboot, set SATA to Enhanced and then XP might get the drivers.

Doh! I should have done that instead of reinstalling after slipstreaming in the drivers. :(

So how did you disable the SATA mode to begin with? I can't find anything in the BIOS and it's making me feel totally nub.

I bought this computer a month ago and I still haven't played a gig with it yet! It's makin' me awfully annoyed.

EDIT: I should note, that I own a registration for WinXP, but do not have a CD. I believe it went missing one of the times that I've moved in the last few years. I've tried slip-streaming drivers from downloaded versions of XP, but they never seem to work. I believe this has something to do with nLite's incompatibility with already edited versions of Windows. If someone has a slip-streamed CD that they would like to send to (I'll pay postage!), I'd love you to PM me. Otherwise I'm stuck with disabling SATA, which is not a good idea with a disk-heavy task like music production. :-/

Not all notebooks have that option in the BIOS.

For those that have, not all (older) BIOS versions have it. Make sure you have the latest BIOS version.

What do you mean "disabling SATA"? Putting it into compatibility mode? I thought you didn't find the option in the BIOS.

Also, wasn't the info above saying that you actually can put it into compatibility mode for the duration of the install, install Windows, install the SATA driver and then put the SATA In normal mode? I.e., without performance losses during running the Win installation.

I'm not sure this is true btw I don't own a laptop with SATA. Maybe one of the people above could confirm whether it worked in her/his case.

Maybe I worded that badly. Wait no, I definitely worded that badly. I meant if someone had found a way to put it into compatibility mode, then I would be stuck with that. Honestly, I've been reading so much about this and trying so many things (and getting no-where) that I've kinda lost where I'm at.

g2s does not have option to switch from sata to ide yet last time i checked. only way is to slipstream for now. if you have more then 2gb of ram xp will not work right either with g2s or most aus models for that matter.

Try looking under this thread "ASUS G2SB1 and new Hitachi hard drive XP Pro 64bit installation problem" ... maybe it can help?
