After 4 weeks of waiting they finally decide to replace my laptop.

Any complaints about this thing? Looks superior to me than the G1s

hmm the only thing is that I bought a 7200 rpm HDD from Gentech when I got my G1s and it seems I will not be getting this back...

I bought one - floor model from Best Buy; they had just put it up 3 weeks earlier but it got discontinued. I was about to buy a Toshiba, and then I saw the Asus. Compared specs, prices, I've been an Asus fanboy for YEARS thanks to their high quality desktop system boards, so I felt confident in purchasing it.

No manual, but after all the discounts I bought the 3 year w/accidental oopsie coverage warranty, which made up for all those discounts, but I would have bought it anyway -- BB is good with their warranty coverage and I know one of the Geek Squad workers; he knows his stuff... but I digress.

    Lovin' mine.

    Great build quality.

    Great feel.

    Great shade of blue.

    Very good screen.

    Great speed.

Works with Ubuntu (though AHCI has to be disabled before installing; re-enabling after is okay to do) even though I still prefer Vista...

After reading this thread, I went and purchased two Corsair 4GB modules. Vista eats memory like it's got the munchies and I'm using it in design class (I really don't want to use school equipment - virus risk; who knows where those PCs have been! ) I'll report back once I get them installed. Others are having success, and RAM manufacturers don't even list any compatible laptops in their compatibility guides despite selling it.

If anything, the glossy plastic makes fingerprints rather noticeable - but it's a minor nitpick. Well, the words "Republic of Gamers" might dissuade some people thanks to the "G-word", but for a few hundred less than the competition (before discounts), it's just a word.

You will be getting a 7200 rpm HDD. The Best Buy specs are a little off.

The 5400 spec came from the email that Asus sent me.

I will be selling this most likely to buy a desktop as I will be out of the dorms in a few weeks

Whoa, that would be sweet. The 9800M GS is a lot better than 8600M GT. Difference of like 5000 points in 3dmark06.

What an upgrade! Usually they simply swap out the motherboard. The G50v is much superior in every way apart from reso to the G1S, has potential of up to 8gb ram, 2 hdd in raid, either 9700M or 9800M card etc

    Lucky bloke... :)

They were going to , but they ran out of montherboards before the fixed mine and I had already waited for them to order those...

So I guess they didnt want me calling every day for another 4 weeks lol.

But on a brighter note they told me they were upgrading a lot of peoples G1s that were sitting there so they didn't have to wait.

And I got upgraded to overnight, so woohoo

It's a nice laptop But Bestbuy geeksquad SUCKS with there warranties. Numerous stories about them there extreme lack of knowledge (there not certified in anything at all) There insane prices and attempt to blame the customer for anything that happens and goes wrong. To be quite frank A bestbuy geeksquad warranty is as useful as on a bull.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbR4wSAE7NY Watch that.

    Read this

I could keep listing thousands of BBB reports consumer reports and even attorney general reports agianst geek squad but you can google more for yourself. AVOID Geeksquad at ALL costs.

Nope, the G50Vt comes with the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421AS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA hard drive. Once you get it check the hard drive ID through Device Manager and you'll see the code ST9320421AS.

Hmm I work at Best Buy (not GS) and we have never had any of those problems since I worked there. We have 2 or 3 full timers that ARE certified and then a couple part timer college students that help out.

Shipping damage and other things lke that aren't their fault as they send it to the manufacture for repair afaik.

Why are we even talking about this? I am going through Asus directly, not Best Buy...
Well I called them every day for 4 weeks and then after ordering new motherboards and not having enough to fix my laptop they had to order them AGAIN! and I was pretty pissed off for it taking so long in the first place and to have to wait even longer because they screwed up made me even more mad.

But Im pretty sure they were offering to replace a bunch of peoples' that were sitting there for over a certain amount of time. They had 5 left when I called today and they just called to tell me that they sent mine out 20 minutes ago!

Awesome, I can't wait. I'm happy for the most part but also curious how the keyboard feels since they squeezed in the number pad.

The keyboard size and spacing on the G50 series are actually pretty decent and doesn't seem cramped at all. I'm actually surprised that many other manufactures still don't have a number pad on their 15" notebooks.

Same thing just happened for me. :)

I called in last Monday because it had been almost 30 days after being issued my RMA number (for a G1S-X1) and I wanted to confirm they received it. She said I'd get an email within a couple days with replacement specs. Today I called in to follow up and she sent me the email while I stayed on the phone with her. I was quite happy to see G50Vt-X1 at the top of the email! Good luck to anyone else as well.

You guys make me all hyped up. My G1S is at RMA for 3 weeks now, and it's still "waiting". I think that's a good sign. Either a new G1Sn mobo, but maybe even a G50Vt!

Or do you think that only applies in the US?

The only way you can legally get the recovery disks is from Asus themselves. Contact them and request a copy

thanks david.i emailed and called asus both different replies. emailing them requested that i send my laptop in again " T he recovery partition and the recovery media uses the same base OS image, the probably cause of issue you are experiencing would be related to the difference in the driver cd identification. In order to resolve this issue, we would need you to resend the unit in." but when i called thier estore csr just verified my RMA number and said they would be sending in the g1sn recovery disc in 5-7 days :D woot

If I opt not to replace the GPU/Motherboard, is there anyone around here that can use the parts from my G1? I think my friend wants the RAM, but the LCD and other components are in working order.

Bah! My G1S mobo got replaced by a... wait for it... G1S mobo! Not a G1Sn, but the same old G1S mobo with our beloved, defective 8600M GT.

Still, I'm kinda happy that I still have the older, faster video card with GDDR3. If it lasts another two years that should be good enough. A 9500M GS would have been nice though.

But I'm really jealous of you guys with your brand new G50Vts.

So, enjoy it, you lucky b4st4rds :)

I have also been offered this warranty replacement and was wondering if anyone has received theirs yet. If so, can you comment on the display and performance? I was very happy with my G1s, but this notebook seems like an excellent replacement.

This deal is literally sitting in my email waiting for a response as i type this. Thanks a lot for any responses!

You'd be crazy not to accept it. :D

I love my G50Vt. I purchased mine, but you getting it for free make it that much better. The performance is excellent for its size and in my opinion the notebooks native resolution makes it easier for games to run on higher settings while looking just fine. Let me make a note that this notebook for its size is actually ligther than both my previous ASUS M50 and M51 15.4" series, yet the built quality is solid.

my g1s has not had any disastrous issues that would require an RMA yet, but my 2-year warranty is up in approximately 1 or 2 months. do you think it would be possible to send it in for an RMA and possibly get a G50 from it?

The display is average quality, I'm pretty satisfied with it. As far as graphical performance, you're looking at triple the power over the G1S, easy.

I filled a complaint about the replacement of the g1s board with the g1sn board seeing it as a performance drop. My laptop had burn up 3 times already and today i got a call from them saying the 9500gs with ddr2 had a superior performance than the 8600gt ddr3, and that if i wanted they would replace it by a 8600gt, what i refused...
Seeing i wasn't able to get in a agreement with them i will push this case to justice. What i said was that I would agree if they guarantee my laptop on this same issue, and only this issue, for the next 2 years i would take the old one. They refused it saying all they could do was give me 6 months extent of guaranty. Lol...

Any one had to go to these extremes with them? I wont stand by as they try to go over my rights as a costumer.

Please do not just stand by and go with the flow, its as a performance drop so it means they down-graded something.

Any idea on how to avoid this? what did you had to do to get this replacement it would rather avoid all this ><

    Evening ladies and gents.
I wish to share a tale about my G1S-B2 RMA process as well.
One month ago the comp died... oops GPU... so i get an RMA, drive the comp to a Purolator store, off it went.
I called them two days later to confirm that all is in place, and so it was. I called again on monday next week (exactly a week from the time i shipped it off) and was told that its still being diagnosed... what....
Anyway, so i call at the end of the second week and they tell me that a new mobo is needed and it will come in from Thailand.
Beginning of third week i call again and ask whats going on with the mobo order. They said that they have no info on the status. So i request a call back.
The call back came at the end of the third week with bittersweet news: old G1S is in computer heaven, a replacement is what i shall have instead. So i was all excited blah blha no pants party.
    I wait a week.
Call back last wednesday to ask where the email with the specifications of the new laptop is. They say they sent it. I didnt get it. We check my email adres. ITs wrong. So we correct it. They say it will come if not today then tomorrow. I call on Friday to ask where the email is. They say it will come today.I call on Monday to ask where the email is
So i stay on the line for about an hour while the operator contacts the tech office and confirms everything. She then says it will happen today. So i tell her im not hanging up until i have some sort of reassurance cause their words are meaningless (you can understand my frustration at this point) and im not hanging up until i do so. So she gives me her name and id number. Gives me a deadline - one hour and its there, if not i can call back and point fingers.
The email came in 40 minutes.
Now some might jump up at this point and ask me: is your problem man take the G50Vt-X1... its SOOOOOO!!!1111!!! much better...........
G50Vt-X1 is the bottomfeeder of the G50 family. My G1S-B2 was the top of the line exec. IT was packed. When comparing my CAD2200 machine to the G50Vt-X1 i couldnt help but notice that the processor is slower, the screen resolution is bad, there is no bluetooth, there is no ExpressCard 54 slot, and the harddrive speed is slower.... OH YEAH 9800GS WOOOHOOO not. My comp costs a thousand more than this thing.
I emailed back and refused this model explaining my reasons in very good detail. Tomorrow i get a response. I didnt struggle for a month to get a downgrade.

Sorry if this is reviving an old thread but just found this thread after someone else posted.
And damn lots of people seem to have been getting the same problem with their G1s's.
I too have a G1s bought around a year and half ago and its also burnt out and had to get it rma'd (the place where they fixed my laptop in nz said itll take a max of 2 weeks and after constant ringing it ended up taking 4 weeks - just like Vlad_I, i had to keep on ringing them to get status updates, the lady there told me she'd ring up before the day ends and she never rang so i had to ring up lol sigh -.-; ).
And like most other people, asus "upgraded" my G1s to a G1sn mobo, but after that my laptops getting bsods again and now the speakers have completely given out.
I've emailed asus nz about their rma process taking way too long and their G1s's having flaws in it but they just told me i'd have to send it in for another repair.
I bought mine from ExcaliberPC and after emailing them about my situation, understandably they tell me they cant do much about my problem either (but i hope they can help me convince asus to give me a refund or credit for this laptop).
I wonder if i should waste any more time on this laptop or get another one as this is driving me up the wall.

Also as an added bonus if anyone in the US is going to start some sort of class lawsuit against the G1s's, count me in lol...

Just a little update on my situation.
I called Asus customer service again and was told that my refusal is being looked at by their superiors and i will be given a fair option that suits me best. Fingers crossed for G50Vt-A1. (really need that bluetooth and expresscard 54).

Soooo my hopes have been shattered. Although i was hoping to be offered the G50Vt-A1, i was offered the G50V-X5... express54, resolution and bluetooth vs. graphics = graphics wins. As many of you know the 9700m inside the G50V is significantly less powerful than the 9800m GS in the G50Vt. So im gonna have to bite the bullet and maybe make aftermarket mods... if i ever get around to it.
