Hey guys, I have a G1S that when started up makes the usual startup explosion noise usually accompanied by the asus logo, but the screen remains black. I don't think it's a problem with the screen as I've tested it on an external monitor...also the notebook doesnt seem to make it very far through the startup process. It makes a very brief loading noises and then nothing. I'm quite worried here, and suggestions on how to trouble shoot this issue?

This is probably GPU failure... due to the dreaded and infamous nVidia fault.

If still under warranty, send it in and request replacement with a G1Sn motherboard+GPU combo as those are less likely to be affected by this particular fault.

If warranty recently expired, call the service center anyway and try to get it fixed under warranty under the reason that this is a known recurring fault, rather than a particular fault of your machine.

thanks for the suggestions E.B.E., the notebook is no longer warranty unfortunately...it's actually a G1S-X1 purchased from best buy two years ago, any idea how adversely is this going to affect my ability to get it fixed? either way I take it I should probably get in touch with an asus service center?

That's a bit worse since BestBuy versions have just one year warranty.

But in any case you could try calling a service center and explaining that you are suffering from the nVidia fault (read a bit about it first, in order to not be caught uninformed), and that you believe you should be entitled to free repairs, since you were sold a faulty unit. Be polite, but firm, throughout your conversations.

Otherwise, you can consider buying a G1Sn mobo + GPU yourself, but that can be expensive (I'm not even sure they stock them on the ASUS eStore), or getting a new computer.

I called a service center yesterday, I'm going to be sending it to them for RMA in the next couple of days...they preemptively informed me that I'll need to pay for repair costs, but once they do the diagnostic and (hopefully) confirm it's a GPU issue I will probably try to make a case for free repairs...I've done some research on the nVidia fault and from what I've ASUS denies that any problem exists, sounds like an uphill battle...

I always knew it was a matter of time till this thing melted down it ran so hot, any other info I can arm myself with to help my case? has anyone had success getting free repairs on a G1S?
