Alright I have finally decided that I am going to get an Asus G1S for my first laptop. Just have another question about it.

    I can get it for $1835 at Gentech with a 160GB 5400rpm 2.5-inch 9.5mm HDD S-ATA or I can get it from BTOtech for $1849 with a 100gb 7200rpm SATA 8mb Cache.

Now the question is, is 7200rpm that much better than 5400rpm that I am losing 60gb of space? I know I can get an external HD if I need more, but I just wanna be sure that it is worth it. BTOtech's offer only lasts 'til Sunday so I am not even 100% sure that I will get it by then.

The performance bump from 5400->7200 can be significant, at the expense of a bit of increased heat and decreased battery life. As for the 60Gb, it depends on how much you already have or plan to put on it..... 100Gb is pretty big for most people, but YMMV if you have a large multimedia collection and you don't want to use an external drive.

What do you mean by can be significant? Is it doing to make a huge difference or is just a little bit better?

Close this, the offer changed to the first 5 orders, so I don't think I'll get it in time anyway, I'll just stick with the 5400rpm.

    Can't wait to get it!

The difference in performance between a 100 GB 7200 RPM drive and a 160GB 5400 RPM is minimal. They both have high transfer rates, because the 160 GB has its data much more densely packed than the 100 GB drive. The one advantage the 100 GB drive does has, is that it has access times, because its spinning faster.

Opss , missed that part. But bottomline, I don't think tha performance difference is going to be that big between a 160GB 5400 and 100GB 7200. The 160GB should be just fine.

I will definitely be getting the 160GB HD since I doubt I can get my laptop before Sunday for the deal on the 7200, 100GB one.

Yeah good choice the 160+gb 5400's are toe to toe with the smaller 7200's and more storage to boot. Cant go wrong there.
