If this has been posted, then I must suck at the Search function.

My G1S is awesome, except when the CD/DVD drive kicks into gear. It rattles quite loudly. What's the deal? Call Asus and see what they say?

It quites down a little if I hold my hand on it, but it's darn annoying.

Is the noise only when it starts the read after disc insertion, or every time the disc is accessed during i.e. a movie? Some drives will be loud and vibrate only at the start, and then quiet down.

You could always talk to Asus CS, they might be able to help (but I'm sure you'd be sending it in on rma for them to check it out and/or put a new drive in).

It's when it spins up into super hairdryer mode (like when it's installing something).

Mine does that too, its normal. Even the guy who wrote the review on this website said that it does make some noise.

It may be normal, but it not what I'd consider "right."
They should have made it a slot loader.

Some notebook DVD drives sound pretty scary if you're not used to them.

Also, is the DVD labeled by any chance? I have had installation CDs that had asymmetric labels stuck to them vibrate A LOT because of unequilibrated mass distribution.

What I found is that it depends on the Media being used. On only one CD that I used did I notice it get loud and shaky. Most of the DVD/CDs that I have put in remain quiet. Maybe the CDs you are using might be out of balance, or the drive is easily put out of balance.

It doesn't matter the DVD. It just spins up to a high speed (which is fine), and it rattles against the computer.
I guess I'll just live with it (although it makes me wince every time).

    It *seems* to be normal.

Mine did that on my 2nd day with the notebook - that was when installing Photoshop CS2. It also vibrated quite loudly when I was installing a game - can't recall which one it was - I believe it was Supreme Commander.

That's been it so far. And also it has never done it during DVD playback, so all good so far.

At first I thought it had something to do with me picking up the notebook, and kinda 'pressing' on the dvd drive while it was installing something - that was when it started - but I'm beginning to think it might be normal. So far I haven't had any problems with it, aside from that, which is why I did not return it since returning at that time would've been a huge hassle for me.

I got mine yesterday. When I put in the Nero Essentials CD that came with it, it vibrated so horribly that I had to take it out. i was worried that there was a problem with the drive, but since then I've watched several DVD movies along with data DVDs and it is quiet on all of the DVDs. Some of my cds there is a vibration though. I'm mostly concerned with DVD's so it is not a prob for me. All of my installation CDs I install from images on my HD using a virtual CD drive anyway. It is a little disappointing though.

I'm using the Asus Splendid with the vivid setting and it makes my screen look amazing. I used to think my desktop LCD was all-that, but the Asus screen makes it look like washed out crap. This is the best screen I've ever seen on a laptop and I've owned several different brands.

    Hello all

I have had my G1S-A1 for about 5 months now, and I have JUST started getting this vibration from the drive, using any optical disk. The vibration can be halted by holding the drive door in, as observed by others. This does not cause any apparent disk read errors, but it is definitely loud and annoying. I noticed two screws on the bottom labeled "A" which to me either mean they are for adjustment, or just for removing/replacing the drive. Either way, I think tweaking those screws/adding washers/adding some sort of tape/rubber to hold it in place will get rid of the sound. I'll report back here when I have time to take care of this...
