    Hi,

I'm looking into buying a M51SN or a M50SV or a M50SA. There seems to be quite a number a different models for these series. I found contradictory information on the internet and the ASUS website doesn't give any specific information. These are the models I found available in Australia :
    M50SV-AS016G
    M50SV-AS028G
    M50SV-AS030G
    M50SV-AS082G
    M50SV-AS118G
    M50SV-AS126G
    M50SV-AS154G
    M50SA-AK009G
    M50SA-AK032G
    M50SA-AK048G
    M51SN-AP003G
    M51SN-AP004G
    M51SN-AS037G
    M51SN-AS067G
    M51SN-AS068G

This list is not exhaustive ... you should then understand my confusion. Could anyone provide me with specific data sheets for each of them as well as RRP ?
I would as well be interested to know the manufacture of the LCD panel for each of them : CMO1523 or AUO2277 or CMO1541 or others ....

I am in Australia and therefore contacted ASUS australia (by phone) but they couldn't help me out, they send me back to their reseller which couldn't help me out either. I called back the support and they give me an email address which came back to me because of temporary failure. Most of the shops don't have full information. I then called back the pre-sale ASUS guys who gave me spec for their latest models (not the LCD panel type though) but these are not available in any shop ... ; Contacting the reseller about them , they don't know about these models !!!

I checked out the ASUS support forum, tried to send an email to the ASUS support but I don't have any Serial number I'm looking to purchase ... This is starting to be a nightmare !! I have been trying to get information for 4 days now .... How can this be ??? I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't change my mind about purchasing ASUS.
Hopefully I will get a full and clear answer from here.

Thanks a lot in advance for any answer,

    Regards,
    Gregory

Only the first part is important. That's the model of the computer. The second half is just certain configurations (a different processor here, a different harddrive there). All LCDs are randomized, whatever's available at the factory the day that computer was built gets used.

I know the models. What I am interested in is the different configurations available ! Tunner TV, HDMI, T9300 or T9500, HD DVD or Blue-ray, 2G or 3G or 4G, HDD 200 or 320GB etc .... I would like to know what I am buying.
I hope the LCD type panels are not random as you are saying ... if it is the case there is no way to find out if the product you are purchasing is a well known LCD panel with issues like the AUO2277.

The TV tuner doesn't work in the states, so I can't comment on that one. I don't think the extra premium is worth it for the T9500 processor--the benchmarks I saw only made it minimally faster than the 9300. I chose HD DVD, because Blu-Ray wasn't available with the 9300 processor at the time of purchase. I went with 4 gig of memory because I wanted to use Vista Ultimate. I opted for the 7200 rpm HDD, but in retrospect that was probably a waste of money--go for the 250 or 320 gb HDD. My monitor is the AUO, it may be a little grainy, but it is really a bright, nice looking image.

At the end of the day I would like to know which model for example have the specs you described (by default) .... ASUS should be able to provide such information ... no ??
If I purchase a M50SV-AS118G or a M50SV-AS028G what do I get ? There is difference of prices between these models so it justify to me to know what are the full specs of each configuration. I won't rely on shops specs as I have notice contradictory specs with same models ...

Hmm, I don't think anyone here will know detailed specs for those models, except perhaps the resellers -- except the resellers are all in the US and models are different from AU there.

I understand the problem, and I don't think there is any good solution to it. ASUS.com will only give generic specs at the model level (e.g., M50Sv without any suffix). What I suggest is that you look for the same model across a range of resellers, look at their specs, and try to find out heuristically what is the most "likely" spec to be correct (e.g., eliminate copy-paste typos etc.)

That is not guaranteed to give good results. Also, I'm not sure resellers list the LCD type anywhere in their specs...

They clearly don't. Only ASUS could give me this kind of information (which actually is going to be a major point for me to go for one model or the other). Anyone got a working email for ASUS support ?
My frustration comes as well from the impossibility to get into contact with someone from ASUS who can answer me ...
I posted the question on the official ASUS forum :
    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...board_id=3&model=M50SV&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
    Will see ...

here is the Asus M50sa Ak032g

    http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?keywords=m50sa&products_id=31297

The Screen is the AU0 model and is 1680 x 1050

not sure if it has the DVT in it? as in some countries and asus do not offer the accidental cover in their Aussie warranties
$2340 in a great price and centrecom in Clayton Vic has great service (went there the other day) they are hard to get at the moment as they are really selling well. In my research this is the best spec laptop for the money and I have looked at alot of laptops in the last few weeks.

one shop assistant did mention that all the companies in Oz are releasing alot of their new products over the next 4 weeks (by the end of May early june)

    M50SA-AK002C specs is C2D T9300, ATI HD3650 1Gb, DVD-multi, 3Gb RAM 320Gb HDD, 1680 x 1050 monitor.

    Thanks for these info.
It looks like the M50SV-AS082G has 2*1G RAM and the M50SV-AS082G has 1*2GB RAM.
Would anyone know what C2D means ?

Basically I am now looking for a model with :
    - T9300 or higher
    - 2*2G RAM
    - 320Gb HDD
    - 1680 x 1050 monitor resolution
    - DVD-multi/LS

I haven't been able to find one with these specs yet ... I'm not interested into the Blueray drive, I prefer the LS functionnality.

You're not going to be able to get an M50 with that specific monitor resolution. Most resellers will be able to give you an M50 with a 320GB HDD and 4GB ram with the T9300 and DVD multi-drive.

Asus' power bricks are all dual voltage so you'll be fine, but you will need an adapter for the plug itself since it will be the American standard and won't fit in European wall sockets. I've took my W3a overseas last year and that's what I've learned.

Yes I can confirm that. If the physical adapter is available, the laptop will work fine throughout the world. And the power brick is included with ANY laptop that I know of... (answering to a question on a neighboring thread)

As to an unanswered question on the previous page I think, C2D is Core 2 Duo.

It is quite difficult getting Asus model specifications in Australia.
The M50 mainboard appears to be a better mainboard than the M51 - in particular the inclusion of HDMI.

The previously mentioned M50SA-AK032G looks like a good spec'ed model, though the M50SA-AK048G is to replace this & will have the faster T9500 CPU.

Now I don't use Lightscribe (LS) much at all on the desktop, but consider this to be a handy feature when on the road. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a Blu Ray + LS Notebook drive being manufactured at this time (even though the Asus Blu Ray notebooks come with LS software pre-installed).

According to the Australian Whirlpool forums, the screens on the M50's are better (ie not having the same issues) than the M51's.

Hello Greg, and all other posterz!

@ Greg in particular, I also have been looking around intensely for the perfect deal for the M50Sv in Australia. I gave up on trying to decode the suffixes for the models, since sites vary on the description of the same model, or have different models completely the same! I have a friend named Ravage on the forums from Aus too, he JUST recently 'pulled the trigger' and bought a M50Sv-A1. Now I know what you are going to say, hey A1, B1 and C1(now D1?) models are US only, well this this site is Aus and sells them. They can also change the screen and resolution of the laptops with their own. I seen in a previous post that you wanted a WSXGA+ resolution, well luckily enough they have this size, in matte.

I regularly redo searches back on price check sites like staticiICE and shopbot every few days looking for a better deal on the M50Sv, while I save the money for it (see my signature? ^_^) and so far the price has been dropping nicely, deals becoming more frequent with ITestate, Penta Computers and KS Computers leading so far in competitive pricing. All around $1700 or less. And these are all the M50SV-AS082G models, listed in my sig once again.

I'll try and keep in contact if I find anything further, though school is breaking my balls at the moment so I hardly come on the forums any more which is a shame..

Well anyway! Thanks for reading and I hope that somewhere in that mess above I have helped/informed you on a matter you needed. :]

    Cheers Falcon.
Actually this is one of the most common configuration of the SA. I did at the end figured out most specs ... still I was giving by ASUS Australia some reference (for ex M50SV-AS154G) that I haven't been able to locate anywhere ...

This is a spec for a M50SV-ASG152G. The 154 has 4 gig of ram, this one has 2 gig.
    http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=100_56_120&products_id=31821

You won't be able to find a 1650x1050 res, in anything other than a SA (SA stands for ATI/Blueray/1650x1050/Multimedia) as stock. Sv is Nvidia/DVD/1440x900/Entertainment edition. You can ofcourse get it from retailers like p4laptops that will modify the screen or you can do it yourself.

Asus is really good at pumping out laptops I have noticed, with little to no regard for the naming structure, resulting in HORRIBLE preconfiguration.

EDIT: After looking a bit more, it seems there has been a newer revision that both SV and SA have Blueray enabled, but SV/SA classifications as to screen size and graphics cards have stayed the same. Check Centrecom Instore PDF for diffrent models side by side (there are about 6 or 8 there). P4Laptops btw is the most overpriced piece of crap I've seen in ages.
