Just found this review of the UK version of VX2 :) with go 7700
it has few more photos and some more details, there is pics of the case and mouse it comes with, although it did not mention 'metallic keyboard' or 802.11 N ,some other sources mentioned before. and vista really sucks for gaming.
personally I will wait for the version with go 8600/8700, and hopefully Nvidia will have release new drivers then.

Wow thanks for the link. Yeah, if it gets a nice, competent DX10 card, then it would make it a lot more attractive to me.

Someone should keep track of stolen laptop rates by model. I would suspect that this would be on top.

The gaming benchmarks are obviously bad because of Vista, 8FPS @ 1280x800 in CS Source 4x/8x ... lol i do better then that with a way worse card.

nvidia's drivers must be really bad right now =/

Before anyone puts the Vx2 down (I'm sure someone will), keep in mind that in 4-5 months time we should not only see a somewhat revised santa rosa based model for sale in the US, but also updates to drivers that should make vista just as good for gaming as xp was..... It's an awesome, awesome system and it's only "con" should be that it's expensive... and if that's it, that's great considering only those that can't afford it will care... Those that can will know they're getting a top shelf system in every possible way.

    1) Vent located on the right hand side, once again, I can't believe Asus missed this, despite using the same chassis design as the V1JP, the percent of right hand users is so much greater than left handers, there should be almost not reason to have right hand side vents, its pointless. I am left handed and I use a right hand mouse, because I have been trained at a young age to do so. I know there's a lot of other reasons to why the vent is on the right on side that I may not know of.

    2) Price is actually meant for a different target market, if the price was 2500$ USD i'm sure this would open the VX2 to a larger market, but at 3K USD...only a handful of people would want it.

Also the specs on this laptop, projected by Justin, are amazing, if they come something like that, then this will be one heck of a powerhouse than even those Alienware owners may be tempted for something like this.

All in all this is got to be an almost perfect laptop, specs are good, design is good, quality is good, almost can't get better than that.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Heres the 'trade-off' for having a left or right side vent.

Right side vent will result in the right side of the notebook to be fairly warm, where the keys are. But if you think about it, you wouldn't notice since usually your right hand is on the mouse. If it was vice versa, the heat would be evident on the left side, where a lot of people keep their hand. And it does get kinda annoyingly warm.

Will the 7700 in the Vx2 ever be available for purchase on the Asus EStore? Justin I think you know what I have in mind. :)

That's a smart Idea, Go 7700 in a V1JP, I would like to see that, if possible.

Coriolis thanks for the input your right I guess, but I would rather have a warm right side of a laptop over a vent that spits our warm to hot air several inches away on your right hand, which is used for writing and more.

I can't wait till someone here gets a VX2 and does a review, now that would be nice, the 3DMARK06 benchmark looks off, 2900 points in 3DMarks06 but at 10x7 resolution, I thought 3DMArk06 uses 12x10 resolution...hmm

DX9 is not a con...none of us here really care too much about the European version of the VX2, we already know the VX2 will come with Santa Rosa and a 8xxx series video card that should have DX10 capabilities upon its release in North America. ;)

    Thanks,

Vice versa for me, its really not that bad, and there are always ways to fix it, like the folding business card trick. After long usage, check the right side for the notebooks with right side vents. Its often warm, but we don't notice since the left hand is usually using the cooler left side, however, there would be complaints of a warm left side if the vent was on the left side.

I find this a good move, though it sacrifices something, I think its well worth it. Unfortunately, back batteries are the rave these days(opens up for easy docking without sacrificing the whole back area, as well as optional larger cell batteries that 'stick' out), but I've always been fond of the M6(z70) battery placement, which was smack right in front of the notebook. It, however, also had its downfalls, which was that the battery can not be 100% fitting(or else, bad friction) so there may be areas of empty space, which leads to squeaking and slight flex.

    Pretty much:

    Left side vent
-Warm area on left side keyboard/wrist rest due to fan placement(fan placed near CPU/GPU near that area)
-Can be uncomfortable for left hand
    -No real 'fix'

    Right side vent
-Warm area on right side keyboard/wrist rest due to fan placement(fan placed near CPU/GPU near that area)
-Can be uncomfortable for right mouse hand
-Can be easy fixed with vent displacement object

    Back vent
    -No option of larger battery
    -No option of docking

The review looks good...can't wait for the VX2 to be released in North America. :)

I don't really mind the right side vent myself, it keeps my hand warm in a cold day :D.

I truly see no 'cons' of the VX2 except the price. Its very powerful, sleek and nice, lots of 'little details' that make it even better.

Look at the bundled stuff for the VX2. The carrying bag, the mouse, the mousepad! Nice, nice. Like I said, its only drawback is price.

Very interesting point, and your right for the most part.
Asus knows whether they are going to make extended batteries and docking stations for the notebook prior to making the notebook itself.

With that in mind, If Asus will not offer a docking station and or extended battery, there's almost no point having a rear loaded battery. It makes more sense to have a front loaded battery since the weight distribution becomes more equal and frees the entire backside of the laptop for ports.

The G1 in my opinion benefits from this, it has a front loaded battery and look how wonder the port placement are. It is a con to have the Vent on the right hand side. It is not a con to have a vent on the left hand side, but this is just my opinion.

With the V1 chassis, It would be nearly impossible to create a front loaded battery with a docking station, since the ports at the back would become useless or might get damaged if placed on the back.

I can agree, that having a right have vent does keep my right hand warm in the cold winters of Canada ;)

But a left side vent would do the same for the left hand, and those who use right hand mouse won't have vent blowing air on to their hand.

You also make an interesting point about space and squeak sounds coming from the palm rest if the battery is placed at the front. I also like the M6 for its design, but I'm sure Asus can figure out something to stop the sounds from the palm rest if the battery is placed at the front.

If someone were to ask me, would I buy the Vx2, I would say, 100% YES! because it really does have everything all in 1 package, regardless of price. LOL

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

The Vx2 is based on the motherboard of the V1jp......... vent location is going to be in the same place. Asus isn't missing anything, that's where they're putting them and for good reason. Optical drive on the left because people hate putting cds in on the side they typically use a mouse, and a vent has to go oppsite of that so that all the ports don't end up on only one side... It's a design decision and if they did it differently just as many, if not more people would be up in arms over that choice. They are doing the best they can to keep hot air away from you and putting the vent in the rear right side is about as good as they can do since there is no room in the rear due to the battery design.... which is there because it helps balance the system out both weight wise - and because ports in the rear are hard to reach..

"The VX2 is available in two finishes - yellow and carbon fibre. Both are limited edition, but the carbon fibre model reviewed here only runs to 100 models - so if you want one you'd better be quick".

Look like not everybody with enough cash can own this baby lol.... :)
Yes, if possible I won't mind to take one also.

Do you know how difficult it is to do this, engineering wise? They would need to redesign the whole motherboard.

I no doubt understand it would require a whole re-engineering of the motherboard, but if you look at it, W3J owners don't like the vent on the right hand side, I personally don't like the vent on the right hand side, my friends who used it also stated the same.

Look at all the G1 owners, they have a right side optical drive, no complaints yet, also most people don't even use it. Even if the VX2 had a HD-DVD or Blue-Ray which was an interesting point that the seconds review came up with. They still wouldn't use the optical drive.

I personally wouldn't mind moving my mouse just for 2 seconds to put in a CD and then close the tray and then put my mouse back into position. Also when the price is this high (not a problem in my opinion) use Slot Loaded drives, but I am not sure how this would affect features like a multi-bay.

Either way, if I had the money for the VX2 I would get it, especially the North American one, with the Black lid (carbon style) since I prefer the non flashy look, compared to the eye catching yellow, hehe.

Those extras that come with the VX2 are nice! That Bluetooth mouse and the mouse pad look quite interesting, same with the bag.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem
