I am considering ordering the F3SV from newegg tonight. I know its relatively new but wondered if anyone had any opinions. I was waiting for HP to release higher end gpu in v6500 but I dont like waiting any longer. I noticed many say the build quality of F3 isnt very good. Is this just compared to other Asus notebooks or compared to other laptops like the 6500 from HP? If the quality is less then the HP then I probably wont buy this notebook from Asus. Advice greatly appreciated.

The f3 build quality is a bit crap, If you can afford it go for the V1 update, Or wait for Asus to release a few more models.

The F series is Asus' bottom budget line, cheap by Asus standards but roughly comparable in build quality to mid-level HP, Dell and Acer. The benefit is that you can get an inexpensive Asus system with good internal parts. The next step up would be the A series. Of course, the V series is Asus' premiere line, and priced accordingly.

The A series is 14.1" though isnt it?. I think in terms of 15.4" It goes F3, G1, V1, Vx.

the only f3Sv has santa rosa, The f3 denotes the model and size, the last 2 letters describe the configuration. Most the Santa rosa notebooks seem to have a S

Damn, I thought the F series was somewhere in the middle of Asus's products. I was gonna buy it too, but after so many negative reviews about the build quality I'm changing my mind

Is there any charts where it's possible to see which is the "rankings" of different Asus Series?

I come from the Acer's World and that's way easier...

In increasing order of build quality, the series are something like:

    F, A, G ? S, W ? R, V/VX

Question marks mean that I'm not quite sure what the order of the guys to the left and right should be :)

msett1-i think you should get one of the higher build quality asus laptops, if you can afford it, if not, go with the hp or a nice compal from powernotebooks.com.
    Hope I helped.

The general consensus is that the lowest quality Asus notebooks are equivilant to mid range HP/Acer Models.

I am pretty stuck on the F3SV as I want good (not great) graphics and fingerprint security. This looks like the only Santa Rosa laptop with these features.

Now to decide between the A1 and B1 versions. Looks like the only differences are display resolution WXGA+ vs. WSXGA+ and T7300 vs. T7500 processors. Did I miss anything?

Are you sure about your information.

F3SV-B1 goes for on average around $1550-1600 dollars with 2gb of memory, on powernotebooks.com an equivalently built up ifl90 goes for $1800+. Remeber F3SV-B1 comes standard with 1gb memory so need to spend another 50 to upgrade to 2gb, also Asus comes with carrying case, external mouse and vista home premium.

Also, cd-dvd player is lightscribe capable on Asus not sure if it is on Compal, but no indication that it is. Furthermore, as no one has a Compal yet, the exact video card designation is not even up on anyone's website in terms of being 8600m gs v. gt.

Wow three choices of resolutions. So what is a good resolution WXGA, WXGA+ or WSXGA+? Currently I have a T42 with a 15" screen and run at 1400 x 1050. That is not too far from WXGA.

Oh and I can't see by the spec at Newegg if the X1 has 1GBx1 or 512MBx2.

Would the build quality of the Asus F3SV-X1 be better then a HP 6500?

Huh? An IFL90 at powernotebooks.com similarly configured to a F3SV-B1 comes to about $1650. The stock F3SV-B1 I see at newegg is about $1600 with 1GB RAM. Add the price of the RAM and you're getting pretty darn close to an IFL90.

Some of us don't care about lightscribe.

Yes Im sure. I configured a IFL90 for $1350, with better graphics but a little bit slower cpu, and 1gb less ram [so, I can upgrade for $60 later] for 100's less. Also comes with extras like I said, built in camera, and fingerprint scanner.
But w/e, im not in the mood to argue, I just got my comp and some rare trading cards on ebay.
