I've had my M50VM for around a week, and today I've started noticing a high pitched sound when I connect my headphones. This didn't happen before, I've tried everything. Messed with the settings, with the microphone, I even installed a new driver from realtek's homepage, and now the headphones won't work!, and you can still hear the high pitched sound when you connect them. Should I return the laptop?

If you have any USB devices plugged on the right side of the notebook, try disconnecting them or use the USB on the left.

that's it, that is the problem, any way to fix it other than use the left side?

i don't find it a big problem i dont notice it after awhile, maybe it is worse on different headphones, i use ATH-A900's

Hmm strange, whats the deal voltage feedback from the usb port in use, or not enough power for the two to share?

Also it is hard to tell but i am pretty sure it goes away when you are outputting sound, you can only hear it when you just have your headphones on and not playing anything, but start music or a video or any kind of sound and you don't notice it.

Yeah, that was the problem. Thanks for the suggestion!!

It definately is a manufacturing defect. What will Asus do about it?

Not all usb devices cause it. A mouse will have a constant sounds, but an external hdd seems to have no sound, then a lot of interference when the hdd is transfering data. A keyboard doesn't seem to cause it.

The sound indeed becomes less noticeable when you're listening to other things, but it's still there. It's really annoying.

That's right. I was using the Asus Mouse that was included in the package. The high pitched noise is constant and it's horrible.

It indeed seems like a voltage problem.

The problem existed in the M50Sv too, and apparently Asus is working on a BIOS fix for the problem.

look on page 80 of the M50Sv: review and owners lounge ;)

I've had mice that did that to desktop speakers. You could only hear it when you were moving the mouse. I always assumed it was some sort of RF shielding problem, as I could produce a similar noise when a cell phone would be about to ring a few inches from the same speakers. Since the USB ports on either side would require the same voltage and share it the same way with the microphone port, I'm not sure I understand how voltage comes into it.

I've been using headphones and Asus mouse for a couple of weeks and do not have this issue. Whoever has issues, did you install 64 bit OS maybe?
