This is probably really obvious to everyone here, but I never heard about it and it surprised me:

If you tilt your laptop to the left, it messes up the operation of the heat pipe and the temps go through the roof. At least I think that's what's happening.

Do not post a warning with just "thoughts" claiming it to be true when they are just what you "think". I highly doubt anyone runs a notebook tilted sideways but a notebook should be able to run and operate regardless of the direction held unless there is a possible faulty part.

I did look it up before I posted: simple heat pipes that use gravity and capillary action to circulate the coolant only work well in a horizontal orientation.

Never noticed it before, but then I never had a laptop I felt I needed to constantly monitor the temperature of. Give it a try.

Heat pipes are not just solid masses that heat goes thru. They have a liquid in them that when heated turns into a gas and floats up to the approprate place to be cooled, when cooled it becomes a liquid again and gravity will pull it back down into the hot area.

So what you say makes sense, but also is true for almost anything.

My desktop cooler works perfectly sitting sideways :p but it was desined somehow to work in almost any direction.

That is due to something called a wick, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pipe

this was already discussed here, yes since the g1s heat pipe is a bit long for the gpu it does that. just use it the normal way ;)
