The GPU in my G1S died on me yesterday, like it seems to do with everyone's, and I'm sending it in for repair/replacement this week. Last time I did this I had easy access to a desktop computer, so backup was easy: I just popped the HD out of my G1S and plugged it into the desktop via SATA. Now I don't have that convenience, so I'm exploring other ways of accessing the data.

With a fried GPU I can still log in to Windows. I have another laptop in the house, as well as two USB hard drives. Is there any way, through a home network or something, that I can access my G1S? Remote desktop maybe? A very precise series of keyboard commands?

    Thoughts?

does the other laptop have a second HDD bay? the easiest way would to be to pop the drive you want to back up into that, if its there.

No, it doesn't. BUT that's a great idea, and I may have a friend with one.

np, also if one of your USB hard drives is 2.5" form factor you should be able to pop it out of its enclosure and put in the one you need to back up.

You could do this, if you live close enough to a repair facility, can you just drop off the laptop with no drive.

That's what I did. The guy at the repair center said it's okay, and that they'll use one of their test drives.

What you're thinking of doing requires you to give your drive shared access so that other people on you're network can access you're data. But since you can't see what you're doing, I don't think you can unless you can attach your drive to something.

You need one of those drive adaptors. I have an IDE/SATA to USB drive adaptor. I can basically connect a 3.5/2.5 IDE or SATA drive and plug it into an USB slot and the computer picks up the drive like an USB drive and you can copy anything you want over.

It's one of the most useful tools I have as a Technician.

Just send it in without the HDD - that's what I did.

Thanks to everyone for some good advice. I may send it without the HD.

I read in another thread that someone opened their G1S up before sending it back and pressed on the GPU, which temporarily fixed the problem. I have the disassembly manual, but where is the GPU? If this worked for just a half hour I could back up all the stuff quickly.

It wouldn't even last that long.

When mine went dead. I had it sit turned off for 8 hours while I was at work. I got home turned it on, it booted the OS and I was able to open up an app and bam it went dead. That was when I called it in, as I wasn't able to boot it up after that.

Managed to jury rig the G1S HD inside a 3.5" enclosure and got the job done. Thanks for all the help and ideas :) I'll report back with RMA results soon.

keep in mind that you need a hard drive to qualify for the replacement (which they probably will do). If you don't give them a HD, they will charge you for it $105 before they proceed with the replacement
