Is the DVD drive on tghe GS1 modular? as they are in Dell's inspiron line of notebooks. The reason I am asking is that it would be nice to put a HD drive in the GS1 at some point when they become more accessible. Also to take advantage of lightscribe, do i have to buy special DVD-R disks or will any suffice

You can remove it yes. Modular is the wrong work to use though, if an optical drive is modular, then it can be removed very easily and replaced with a battery, a HD, or a dummy drive to reduce weight.

For lightscribe, yes you need to buy special discs.
