Do we actually have any confirmation that Yonahs can be replaced with Meroms!?

    Thanks!

It hasn't been 100% confirmed, but there has been alot of activity that it 'has' and such.

I believe AnandTech/TomsHardware had some articles on it.

    Cross fingers :p

Is this something that we can actually do, or will a third party have to do an installation?

That's also my biggest question (i.e. Can I take a Portable One MX up to a Merom when it comes out and its price drops without a technician).

I would imagine you would have to send it into your dealer to put in the new CPU. Otherwise your warranty would most likely be voided.

The warranty is voided regardless if you or a retailer does it. It's easy to switch out, usually takes about five minutes if you know where to go. Just can't do it if the warranty is important to you.

Or you can do what I did and buy it through a site that offers you a third party warranty. alllasus.com does this if you customize an ensemble model. Probably not as good of service as Asus would have, but it might be worth the risk if you want to upgrade it.

Oh and you probably will have to upgrade the bios to get the merom to work in a Yonah socket. Getting a bios that works is up to Asus to provide, but I think I have heard they plan on providing it.

there's a thread about this topic.....YES u have to upgrade the BIOS....and YES :D asus is working on the new one

"Laptop Logic has discovered that the Asus S96J, also known as the Z96J, does not support Merom. When we inserted a Merom processor into our Asus S96J testbed, the laptop reported that the CPU microcode was unknown and refused to boot."

"Asus reportedly has a BIOS in the works to solve the problem. However, this may not be true for all manufacturers."

    DONT U JUST LOVE ASUS!!!!!!

Here's another good article which states the same thing:

    http://anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2715

Ok, so if this is true, can we expect Asus to beef up their current line and sell them with Meroms (without voiding the warranty), or will they wait a while and release a whole new computer a little after Merom comes out?

Thanks for the great links! :D

Ok, from what i know the V1J is the last (one of the last) laptops that ASUS is releasing, June/July For Europe and August for North America.

Lets assume Merom comes out in August.

Will Asus start releasing Merom notebooks right away within 2 months, many doubt this. I do too.

The reasoning is by looking at the past of ASUS release times have been poor, close to 3-6 months behind in releasing notebooks.

Now with Merom, i still need more info from ASUS and from Anandtech to tell us what notebook manufacturers will be doing to get their notebook Merom ready.

So far we know you will basicaly need a BIOS upgrade and then put Merom into the socket and your good. Will ASUS do that in their production and then charge us like 50-200$ more? And release these notebooks withing 2-3 months.

I highly doubt it. Firstly, we know some models are going to be refreshed..now which ones..we don't know, but we can assume all W series would get refreshed. But will the refreshed W3J with Merom just have Merom? Will the W3J chasis be changed a little? Will dvi be added? A better screen with wider viewing angles?

Every little modification to the actual notebook takes time, that's why it will take months.

Now if they just take the W3J and put merom into it, with a BIOS update, and then sell them saying its a Core 2 Duo Machine... but don't release them in 2-3 months..then you know ASUS likes to make us wait... WAIT A LONG TIME!. lol

I hope that ASUS pushes for faster release times without sacrificing build quality or details.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

    Dear all,

As some of you know there is a new Intel CPU out in June/July this year. (Merom and Conroe)

Does anyone have any ideas when it'll be arriving in the Asus notebooks? I'm after either the W2J or the V6J.

    Thanks

    Darren

In my personal opinion, i think memrom asus' will be out around christmas, their core duos havent been out for THAT long and im guessing they still want to make some money off of them, so if they throw in the memroms soon their core duo model's price will HAVE TO drop, not something i think they want to do just yet....plus like everyone has already mentioned asus LOVES killing u with anticipation....i dont see it in their nature to give u a memrom lappy a couple of months after the chips r out!!!

    just my 2 cents.....
