Im planning to buy one soon but both are great machines.

Which one will be more suitable for me?

i'll be using it for schoolwork, gaming(cs,wc3,sf,gunz,C&C3 which is coming out soon), movie watching and music listening.

What are the differences with then other than the Graphic card and screen size?

I chose G1. I wanted to get laptop with nvidia card - they work better in Linux.
And, even if G2 had nvidia, it would be too big for me to carry around.

    I would pick the G1..

It's more portable, weighs less, and even though it's only a 15.4" it has higher resolution and a better video card.

I sorta picked a hybrid between the two..

I really wanted that screen but less weight so I went with the V1Jp which shares the screen but also has the same ATI X1700 video processor of the G2.

You just need to figure out whats more important to you.
Thats what took me forever to decide.

I have some comparison pictures in my review of the G2:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=99581

Overall most people would pick the G1, because it is one of the best performance 15.4" laptops on the market. The G1 is also cheaper than the G2, while comparing the G2 to other notebook in the 17" range at 2000$ USD most will pick something with more graphical power.

Even if your not considering weight, size and overall portability, the G1 is hands down the one to get, but unless you really want a 17" notebook with a great big screen, that may also sway your decision.

If you dont care about the size and portability, as well as the price, you can get the G2, the screen is bigger if thats a plus for you.

Sony doesn't actually make all their own stuff. Some of their lines are contracted out to various ODMs including Asus.

how is the warranty of the LCD screen of the laptop like?

does it have ZDP? or what's the minimum no of dead pixels it must have?

Now your confusing me in terms of what you want and what your looking at

The G1 has 30 days ZBD (Zero Bright Dot) warranty. Meaning if you have a bright pixel located any where, even just 1 pixel, you can get the entire screen replaced.

If you still want to compare the G1 to the Sony SZ, there's a big discrepency in size and performance. The SZ is a small laptop with some performance, just like the Asus W7J. Whereas the G1 is true 15.4" gaming machine, nothing can really compare in terms of spec, performance, interesting design and price.

if the G1 has dead pixels, can we do 1 tot 1 exchange with the shop or do i have to go down to the service centre within 7 days? or do i have to live with the dead pixels?

i've went down to SLS(singapore) today and saw G1 and G2 side by side.....

G1 is dam light but G2 is kind of heavy....(no battery inside).. but since ill be putting it in a back pack... it would be ok...

but G1's screen looks duller and not as sharp compared to G2... although i've adjusted it to Max brightness? why?

With regards to the ZBD Warranty if yuo have a pixel error, then you will have to send it to the Asus Service center where they will remove the screen adn give you a new one.

The G2 weighs 9.7lbs, 4.4kg, while the G1 weighs 6.8lbs, also your comparing a 17" notebook to a 15.4" notebook, there will obviously be a difference in weight.

As for the brightness it is hard to tell from here, how different the brightness is for these two notebooks in Singapore...but I believe I linked my review here already, but just in case. Click here
When I used both of them side by side I found that both screens to be nicely bright, you can read my comments regarding the G2 brightness and screen in the review. (Things could be different in Singapore buyer beware)

I'm also shopping in Singapore for a laptop. Yesterday I was told that both the G1 and G2 come with ZBD policy. But it applies ONLY to bright dots, not red, green, blue or dead pixels. Also I was told that you can only exchange 1 time. Can somebody confirm this?

BTW, in sg they only sell the lower resolution models. (But will still tell you it's the high resolution LOL.)

The pimps from geylang are more trustworthy than resellers from sls! :) They're just too keen on getting their commision. And because a lot of them don't know a thing, they just tell you whatever.

At one shop, they told me that the price was fixed globally, so they couldn't give me a discount (note that the G2 here is priced 1000 S$ higher than in N America) but they would give me a free gaming mouse and a backpack). From the reviews here I see that these things are already included anyway LOL.

As for the Lightscribe, looking at the global site, it looks like the G1 comes either with or without it. If I wanted to be sure, I would want them to show me the specs from the box.

That's right, not even a brochure. You have to see it to believe it! I have to find out all things myself. At one shop, the girl could only say about the sound system on the G2 that "oh! the sound is really wow!". And then keeps all quiet, doesn't even show it. LOL

Haven't got my G1 yet, quite keen on getting one actually, but don't wanna pay more than 3000 S$ for it. It's way overpriced now. I'm stubborn enough to wait for the price to drop. :) I'll definitely check out the IT show if I don't have it yet by then, but I doubt whether they will lower the price. I hope I'm wrong.

EDIT: Also note that we have to pay higher for the lower resolution version. Doesn't make any sense, really.

Aow, that's some bad news for me . . .

I live in Thailand, but my dad's going down to SGP in a month and I plan to get a laptop from there . . . T_T :(

I was looking at either the A8Jp/s F3Jp or G1, any of you guys in Singapore can give any info on price or specs? The info from Simlim are very outdated or are hardly specific. Thanks in advance, though . . .

Btw, the reason I'm getting one from Singapore is because the one's in Thailand are a hell lot worse. You get lower resolutions AND crippled specs . . .

P.S. anyone know of a rough date of when a decent DX10 GPU will be in laptops for sale?

I've seen the A8Js for 2598 S$. The G1 currently sells at 3588 S$. I don't know about the F3Jp. If I see it somewhere I let you know. Today I also saw the V2, looks like a very good machine if you like 14" high resolution displays. It sells at around 3800 S$. Hope that helps.

EDIT: Another quick note, the display panel of the G1 supports only max 252K colors. This is the same for the high resolution model though.
