I have searched the forum and probably was using the wrong search terms but

Whenever i try booting a CD, my C90S does not recognize it at all. So after going to a friend's house and downloading an ubuntu dvd it boots to that fine. Any idea why the drive will not read CDs but reads DVDs?

Try different brand media (e.g., Verbatim instead of TDK). Make sure the CD is indeed bootable. Make sure there are no scratches on the CD surface.

Does it read CDs in Windows?

If all this fails, then it's probably bad hardware and you need to RMA or replace your optical drive.

CDs that are not bootable work fine in windows, however bootable CDs like Linux and Windows discs both dont read unless they're on DVDs.

What are the stesp i need to take for an RMA?

yeah. same case for me. usually it doesnt read, ( or having trouble ) reading CD-R formats. Unfortunately, it can easily read dvd's.

also check if they are finalized CDs or not (just a thought). no reason that should be the fault, but check in case.

I noticed something this morning, i can burn and read immediately something on a cd-rw and cd-r ( i used the arch linux iso ) However after restarting it does not read the disc anymore. And yeah, i always finalize my cds, i dont think i've ever multi-sessioned them.

Contact the nearest ASUS service center, and ask for an RMA number.

In this case I suggest you request that you only send the optical drive. There's no reason for you not to use your notebook while they replace the drive. Removal is pretty easy (usually involves one or two screws on the bottom of the notebook).
