Dropped my laptop from the night table and screen lighting went out. You can just make out the stuff on the screen in the right light but it pretty much looks black. Otherwise the machine works fine when an external monitor is plugged in. Its 2 years old now and a 1.86ghz pentium m-750. Anyone know how much it will cost to fix and how long it takes. And is it worth fixing?

Hello. Several things can be wrong, starting from the easiest to fix to the most complicated (and expensive):

    1. One of the inverter cables got disconnected by the shock. Solution: open up the computer, reconnect them. There is one cable that goes from the mainboard to the inverter; and one from the inverter to the LCD. Either of those may be the trouble. Cost: ZERO.

    2. The inverter got damaged. Solution: replaced inverter. Cost: approx 20USD from the ASUS estore (if you're in the US).

    3. The backlight got damaged. This is an internal component of the LCD, so most likely you'd need a completely new LCD. Cost: 300 to 400 USD. You may be better off with a new computer.

Edit: Oh and of course another possibility:
    4. The inverter socket or control circuits were damaged on the mainboard. Solution: replace mainboard. Cost: ~ 300USD. See remark above.

Please PM me with your email address and I'll send you the disassembly manual so that you can try fixing 1. (if you feel up to it).
