I've been lurking around here for a while because I was debating whether to buy a refurb G50vt-X5 from Tiger Direct or not.

After reading all the positive posts here I finally did it today and even got some Bing cashback into the deal, that will help with having to pay for Win 7 I guess :D

All I have to do now is wait for UPS to take their merry time delivering it over the holiday weekend and I can have it early next week hopefully.

I'll be back when it arrives,

    Cheers,

    Richard

Hey I wanted to do this too,I bought a Refirb G50VT-X1 just last week and have been messing around with it since,I just love this thing,$650 post- Bing Cashback,Tufty you will love your machine,I have nothing bad to say about it,it is a super High quality machine that runs vista faster than all the Desktops in the house, and don't worry about the dropping key stoke problem,I haven't had a single one dropped, the performance is amazing in games, the thing loves linix...kinda...(just need to figure out how to install the video driver so I can set up all the fancy features),the Full size keyboard is great for my huge fingers and although you don't get the P8400 in your X5,I have had mine to a fun 2.70GHZ,and thats not it's top, thats with no voltage moding and no BSOD in any part of overclocking, not bad for an 2.26Ghz CPU in a $650 laptop, and it runs very cool in the CPU department, overall a great buy, well worth my money, thanks forum "Dudes". :)

Note to self...update CPU speed on sig..

Now I did see that, but there was another thread (from July I think) where someone had tried it but got a message back saying that their laptop did not qualify. Maybe they used a different serial number. Perhaps it will make more sense when I see the different serial numbers on the hardware that are mentioned...

I'm in a similar situation as you but i am on the fence about getting this or shelling out more money and getting the G51VX-RX05. I'm debating whether the 260M is worth the extra money.

I don't know if that was actually fully approved by Asus. Because you have to submit proof of purchase to receive the Windows 7 upgrade, I would think that that's when they'd realize you had purchased a refurb. and subsequently deny your request.

Hi, I'm writing you from Chile (South America [yeah, belive it, america it's not a country, but a continent]) and let me tell you that this laptop is great, I bought mine on Best buy march this year (it took like a month to get to chile, but it was worth it) It's a great machine, runs almost every game maxed out. BUT Please be REALLY carefull with the headphone out, it's really sensitive because of the jack input detector, when it gets stuck, it cannot be undone, trust me i've tried everything and still cannot fix this issue (there's a thread dedicated to this, in case it happens to you http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=375227 )

Anyway, congrats on the buy and enjoy your laptop. BTW I installed Win7 (downloaded the RC1 from microsoft homepage) and it works like a charm, it's like a vista that works, hehehe. Greetings from Chile. c'ya

It is not, seriously,2.493GHz out of the box,(and a limit that is way higher I have seen 2.9)and a much higher OC head room, the RX05's CPU's limit is 2.5 at best.
I mean $650 for 98% of the performance!
You could almost buy two after tax (Remember "BestBuy" charges tax everywhere.)
Plus the OLED and a little better batt. life.

Awesome, thanks for your feedback. Yea i would be paying about 480 bucks more if i got the G51. I didn't even see the G50VT-X1 on Tiger Direct. I was originally looking at the G50VT-X5. I like the blue cover alot better than the orange.
