This is a response from albert reguarding the A8JP grainyness issue. Very very dissapointing considering I believe this to be untrue, but nevertheless this is a response from a call I had with him a couple of weeks ago.
    ----------------------------------------------
    Hi,

    Sorry for the delay.

    FYI.

I'm not sure if you are still interested, but regarding the screen issue, it appears the bios has already been updated to fix the screen, and unfortunately, it could be the properties of the particular screens themselves that are used, so basically, it doesn't appear we will have any bios updates coming out that will be able to solve the screen issue if you see it with this model.

Let me know if there are any questions or problems.

    Thanks.

    Sincerely,

    Albert

I was expecting to hear that. After Asus replaced my screen with one that looks the same, I figured it was probably because thats just how the anti-glare coating on the screen is. Perhaps I'll get used to it, and I have noticed its similar to how the screens on some other computers look. But I don't know... maybe I'll ebay it in the next few months and get something else.

Well, I am kind of dissapointed myself, but around 3rd quarter this year I plan on getting a notebook with a dx10 card and santa rosa, etc. So its not too bad of a deal either way. So ASUS replaced yours with one that had the exact same screen? Was it brand new or are you sure they didn't just stick your old one on.

Is it possible for me to get this graininess issue if I dont have it in the first place?

i am pretty sure you guys are all talking about a shiny sheen rather then a screen problem. such was the property of the z71v and a8jm. there is NOTHING you can do. it can NOT be fixed

Shiney sheen? Is that what makes it look very uneven in lighting and kind of pixelated? What on earth would cause a company to make a screen with this feature?

i am not talking about lighting or anything but the physical property of the entire screen. It sounds like all of the people who had been complaining here are talking about the same issue as the z71v. shiny sheen. not a bother to me or most people but it did have alot of complaints from the picky crowd. there was nothing that could be done. it is not the same as grainyness on certain solid background colors due to bios like the w3j and z96j had before the bios correction. the a8jm has this "shiny sheen" i belive the a8jp has a similar "quality". if you dont see nothing wrong with your screen stop looking becuase there is nothing wrong with it. all these screens are pretyt much the same. some people just dont like the way they "look"

I don't have an A8, but I am a picky screen person and can tell you the difference:

Grainy: pixelization of only certain colors, usually darker colors or grays. Can be fixed with a bios upgrade.

Sparkly: most obvious as an all over the screen problem on light colors, especially whites and light grays. It's part of the screen itself and can be described as an "oily" "grainy" or "dusty" looking surface due to the anti-glare coating. The Compal Hel80, Dell d820, MacBook Pro, Sony C and others have this problem. Some manufacturers seem to lay it on too thick.

Thing about it is this. About 75% of people seem not to notice this at all. 10% only notice it if pointed out and the other 15% can't stand it and want to sell their computers.

Compal hel80 screen was highly rated and after sending back the d820, I wanted a guaranteed great screen. I got the hel80 and I wanted to claw my eyes out I hated it so much. My husband could see the problem, but it didn't bother him that much. I sent it back and almost got an A8 til I read it had sparkle. I bought the G1 which is perfect.

I suspect the A8 screens have the sparkle issue, but can't be sure.

I read that screen is made by Chi Mei and I don't think they reputable for making great LCD's.

I only know them for their ultra cheapness and most likely the quality of their products are compromised to make them cheap.

It's disappointing that ASUS would do business with them.

charlotte, thanks for the explanation. That about sums it up for me, the sparkle sounds alot more like the screen on this notebook. I definatly cannot stand it. My wifes macbook does not have this problem (not macbook pro, if there is a difference) and looks very nice.

On a side note, I had to rma my notebook to newegg, and after argueing with them for a long time, they eventually decided to replace it - not for this, for another boot problem. So, I am getting a brand new unopened a8jp notebook in the mail from them. I considering not opening it and selling it while it is still in a new state. I figure I should be able to get at least most of my money for it.

Where is the best place to try and sell it if I decide to do that? I have some qualms about ebay since there are so many scammers out there and I've heard horror stories... some thing with sellin things on forums like here.

The macbook is supposed to be excellent. It's the matte (not sure about the glossy one) MacBook Pro that has the sparkle. Saw it in CompUSA last month.

If you had excellent and high eBay feedback, I'd say sell it there and specify money order only. But if your feedback isn't that high, people may not trust you. I'll let others handle that question.

Good feedback, but only a few transactions, probably wouldn't sell very easy...

Charlotte, your explanation sounds completely right. When I sent this computer back to Asus, I think they replaced the screen with one that has slightly less sparkle to it, but it still has a noticeable sparkle. I can see why it wouldnt bother most people, because sometimes I don't notice it myself and I'm pretty picky.

But still ... If I don't get used to this over the next few weeks, I'll look into replacing the screen myself or selling the computer when santa rosa is out.
So is this a marker of Asus using low quality screens? I was wondering why a notebook with such amazing specs only cost me $1300.
