Well my z70va came in today a few hours ago, and before I post up a review of it, I need some help with my graphics. I've installed all of the drivers and software that came with it, but when i tried to later install ATI Catalyst 5.12, it gave me an error saying that it couldn't detected a basic VGA driver. I went back and reinstalled this one, and then tried again, same thing. So i downloaded one for Omega Drivers and installed that, which seemed to work. I downloaded the F.E.A.R. demo, and proceeded to try out the graphics on this thing. When i had it auto detect my settings, it put everything to low, resolution at 480 x 600. i kicked it up a notch and tried it out. it handled mid range graphics at medium res alright, not great framerate though. as i put it up a little more, to the top end of the mid range and on higher res, i got a message from nhc saying my cpu had hit 95 degrees C and it would do an auto shut down. so i closed the program.
like i said, if i put it on low-med graphics on low res, it runs great, but otherwise it isn't holding up.
is this normal and the reviews i read were wrong? or is there some problem i'm having?
I was under the impression that this machine would run at high res with decent graphics settings. if not, i'll survive, just want to know if theres anything i can do to increase performance.
    thanks in advance.

    btw, i have 2 GB RAM, x700

That doesn't seem right! Maybe you have a cooling problem, make sure you don't block the vent. Also, i get so much better performance with STOCK driver than what you are getting. You sure it x700 Va, cauz the performance you describe sounds like an intel onboard chipset performance to me.

    yes its definitely the x700
ordered it from ProPortable, and it has pretty high standards.
any ideas on what i can do? i just uninstalled my drivers again and tried to reinstall the ati 5.12, but it wasn't recognizing the original driver again, but i know its there because my resolution can go up to 1680 x 1050.
sigh, really need some help with this..

ok, so i reinstalled windows and a bunch of the software including the drivers. the temp is running much lower (53 C when browsing internet, etc) and that isn't a problem. so the game is running slightly better, with med-low graphics. i guess its acceptable but not the med-high end i expected. any help would be much appreciated.

i had a similar problem with the x600, i think... if the cat 5.12 are the ati ones... which i assume they are... you have to use a mobility mod thing to get them to work... dont know why the omeagas dont work though... heres the thread... http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?p=727896#post727896 hope it helps... not 100% sure if its what ur facing... but sounds similar

Ati does not recognize Asus laptops yet, even though they have the new Asus with x1600 graphics on their website. Strange isn't it?

You have to download DHmodtool3 from ... well just google it.

Follow instructions and the Radeon Catalyst drivers will work with your card. Don't worry as there is no inherent danger in using that mod tool. I believe it just modifies the .inf file to recognize the card in your laptop.

    Cheers,
    Mike
