Do all of the latest Asus notebook offerings ship with the OS CDs? It seems like there is a new trend where manufacturers are no longer including the OS CDs, they only provide a disk image that is housed on a partion on the hard drive.

My W3A came with recovery CDs which restore the basic Windows installation on the HDD, not Windows installation CDs. The recovery CDs use the same image files that are also in a partition on the HDD.

Thanks for the information. As long as I have some way to get the machine back to the "stock" configuration I will be happy. :)

I used to prefer the XP cd, but after using the ASUS restore Cd's I can happily say that the experiance is much nicer, back up and running in about 10min, compare that to about 2-3h with XP and having to install sp2 and all the patches etc.

Since when.? Our ramAining w3's all have the original windows disks. Granted they are branded by asus and so is the coa but there are 2 disks. You should be able to install the first one on any pc not that i tried. Has this changed? I guess your talking about the new revised ensembles? That sucks. Make product worse but charge more. Makes alot of sense.

My UK W3A bought in April 2005 has recovery CDs created in August 2004. The main files is Asus.pqi (a Powerquest Drive Image file) which must be generic Asus and not specific to the W3A. The recover CD creates a basic Windows installation. I suspect that the recovery software looks for evidence of an Asus computer before running the installation.
