Due to a number of issues with Sky/OneDrive in Windows 8 and Windows Updates I have recently carried out a complete factory reset from the recovery partition of my Asus Zenbook UX21E.

I originally tried using the recovery DVDs that I created when I first purchased the UX21E but this operation failed. During the recovery process from the Recovery partition a white screen with ERROR in big red letters appeared.

Although the recovery process appeared to continue it later hung on a screen with the message ‘DO NOT OPERATE’ for several hours. I did end up with a Windows 7 installation and the Asus Tools seemed to update the drivers although, when this was completed, the Wi-Fi would not identify a connection and I had to use a Wi-Fi dongle to connect to my network.

Having completed re-installs of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1(previous version as I cannot update to the current version) I still cannot get Windows Update to function correctly.

All I get is a an indication that the update has failed and I have now received just about every error code that Windows can throw at me and I have tried just about every solution to this problem offered by Microsoft but it still persists.

My feeling now is that it points to a hardware problem. I also have a laptop and a desktop PC running Windows 7 and Windows Update functions perfectly on both these two computers.

Any advice as to what this problem might be and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Before any redundant troubleshooting is thrown out there, what have you tried so far? And do you recall the specific error(s) that was generated?

I'm now running Memtest and this is the result so far.

How long should I carry on with this or should I just power down and send the laptop back to Asus?

    Thanks for any replies.

    Hey woolie,

Sorry for the delay! Your RAM is unlikely to be THAT faulty, so it's probably a board or a seating issue. The Windows update problem probably isn't related, though that's not for certain. I would say send it off to Asus while you're covered. Reseating the memory is easy, but opening the system may void your warranty.
