Ok so I have narrowed choice to Asus Z70va with following Specs:

    Pentium M 1.86 Ghz
    1x1 GB DDR2 RAM
    Fujitsu 60GB HD @ 5400 RPM
PCI Express Radeon X700 128mb DDR
    DVD/CDRW
    802.11 a/b/g Wireless
    Internal Bluetooth(?)
    15.4" SXGA+ LCD

    What do you think?
What should I expect to pay?

Should I go for the Z71 for video/graphics?

    tks

The screen is WXSGA if I recall correctly.

It's a good spec'd system, as for price, I can't comment on that.

The z71v's graphics are similiar, as the 6600 = x700. The only large difference would be the price and the chasis, as well as smaller things like bluetooth, etc.

The Z70va and the Z71v are similar in terms of performance... it's really a tough call, and it really depends on the game itself to decide which one will perform better.

As for your specs... they look very decent; however, it depends on what you plan to do with it.

Coriolis is right in that the Z70va has a WSXGA+ screen... nice high resolution

As for your price, I'd say it should be in between 1500-1700 dollars before tax... I THINK...I'm not completely sure. It could be a little more.

The high res screen on the v70 will be better for photo/graphics work, although gaming is better on a lower res screen, as neither of those two gpus will be able to handle the latest games at WSXGA res.
So if your main concern is games then perhaps the v71 is a better choice, if not I would go the v71, nicer overall package.

I have configured my Asus like that from c9tech (except I got the 2x512, not sure what brand the HDD is (5400rpm 8mb), and no bluetooth) and the total including shipping and with a student discount comes to 1415USD!!!

PS underpantman did you mean to say the z70 was a better package?

i have several questions too... whats the difference in performance between the hitachi 60gb 7200rpm and samsung/fujitsu 80gb 5400rpm?

which one would you rather get?

and is it worth getting 2gb of ram? or 1gb of ram is just enough. i don't plan on doing any major photoediting or gaming...

I found a review somewhere comparing a 60GB 7200 and a 100GB 5400 and the 7200 drive was better for accessing smaller files because of its spindle speed but the 5400 drive was faster for larger file (because of its higher data density, the HDD head didn't have to move as much.)

As far as I have read 1Gb should be enough for most people...

Yea, its very similar between the 5k100 and 7k60.

So it depends at the end, I went with a 7k60 because I don;t need it for storage, thats what my 160gb 7200rpm 3.5" external and 60gb5400epm 2.5" is for!
