I have an Asus W3V and it is a great laptop. The one issue I am however having is that I am having one hell of a time burning DVD-Rs. I consistently get discs that burn then show up in the drive as being blank (duds). I have tried a few brands and the only discs that give me consistent burns are Sony DVDRWs.

I tried Imation Discs (these were really poor and even did not work on my brothers desktop drive), Datawrite (a mixed bag but still quite a few duds, and some from ridisc which out of the 4 I have tried have all given me complete coasters. I have also tried lowering the drive burning speed which does not seem to help.

Can anyone help? Has anyone had a similar problem (or not)?

Send it in, replace w/ warranty.

Or try different program for burning. Also make sure you're not running tons of programs while burning DVD's.

solution: upgrade firmware or stop buying cheap, crappy dvds

Wow that came out in a real nice positive manner.

DVD quality matters, but it shouldn't render it completely dead. They would get lawsuits ASAP. I use "cheap, crappy DVD's" and they're fine. Never had one not work yet.

    Firmware is good advice though.

I think Undertow might have the right idea. Sometimes different DVD media work while others don't, though theoretically the drive in the W3V should handle all of them. So often double layer won't work but DVD+R will. But media finickiness is nothing new -- my old CD-RW drive still to this day won't take certain companies' CD-R media while other brands work fine.

    Thanks guys.
Is firmware upgrading risky? Are there any recommended dvd brands?

I've never had a firmware upgrade go bad. You'll be fine doing it in windows.

Hold on. But using Winflash to update my firmware will only update the BIOS not the actual DVD drive firmware. Is this right?
If so how will that help me with burning DVDs?

Nope I have not given them a try. Mainly because the are incompatable with some of the other drives I use (it only seems to accept -Rs), so my other PC is unable to read information from them.

    :(

It is right, using winflash under the windows only update the BIOS, it doesn't help for upgrading the firmware. Upgrading a firmware can improve the performance, it doesn't fix the problem you have. If your drive is defective, you should send it for service.

As a first step, I would suggest using some high quality media. Often times junky media is the culprit. Taiyo Yudens are widely considered to be the best media, both CDs and DVDs. I use Verbatims as a second option. A firmware, the software on the drive that allows reading and writing to discs, update may or may not help fix your issue.

Thanks. I tried some HP discs and have had no problems so far. They are top quality which helped. Verbatims gave me dud writes thought I suspect they were a bad batch of discs since my brother had the same problem on his desktop.

How would I update the firmware on my DVD drive?
    Thanks.

ycd.tsai why dont you get the W3J?

He meant update the dvd rom firmware. find the dvd rom maker and model and go to the manufacter website. Also good media is Very Very important. Crappy media will burn but i will bet anything that in 2 years those disks will have gone completely bad. i used to use all different brand crappy media. and every single disk after 2 years went bad. some in 1 year. even good media will last only like 5 years.

I had burning problems on my W3A (TS-L532A burner) when I first got it and contacted the supplier. The first question I was asked was what software I was using (Roxio CD/DVD Creator). I was then advised to use the supplied software (Nero). The coaster production reduced substantially. I am now a fan of Nero.

I have the same problem too. I use Nero and Verbatim dvd-r. But after burn successful, it still says the disc is blank...

My W3V is 1+ year old now, I didn't have trouble burning DVD-R before. This problem started couple months ago, and I started switching media around. Occasionally, I can burn 1 or 2 disc successfully, but most of the time, it just says the disc is blank. I've been using Verbatim for a long time and my pioneer dvd burners (2) for my desktop has no problem with this media.

It seems like quite a few people have this problem too.

PS. I just use DVD identifier to check my Verbatim disks, but it shows the Manufacturer Name is Mitsubishi Corp. !!! Not Verbaim !!! Did I get robbed?
