    Looks very promissing...
    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

It's quite complicated to find more info, but it seems that this might be my new laptop. Only U41JF is officially announced on asus site, but I found that 13.3 inches U31JG has geforce 415m graphic card, while U41JF has 425m

This is indeed good news especially with the GPU being an 415m which is a very good replacement of the long in the tooth 310 and I agree with Evil Sleep, they need to add better displays.

BTW I saw this on JR.COM site a U36 and it still has the 310 as its GPU, so this isn't a u35 replacement not sure what it replaces.

This is from the JR Site:

It's strange because in the official Asus site they state that U41JF has e-sata port and in this review no high-speed ports are mentioned (except, of course, that it doesn't have usb 3)

I'm also interested in the upcoming U41JF. On paper it looks like the ideal laptop for me, and the design appears to be quite nice (I dig the contrast of the silver model with its black keyboard tray). Hopefully the keyboard doesn't flex as much as the K-Series I tried briefly at BestBuy last week.

Is it me, or does the U41 screen shell look very thin in photos? So thin I wonder how strong it might or might not be.

Looking forward to more details - expected release date and pricing. :)

in Europe release for the mid of December (u41jf), u31jg is already available, for the 13´´ Acer 3820 tg is still the best choice for performance and battery life...but the built quality is Acer :)

guys, really like what is with these damn prices? for price like that pretty decent gaming laptop can be bought. to bad i have one, and i dont really need it anymore, all i need is 13 incher, its perfect for me, but those prices are ridiculous.

edit: U31JG, with 6 cell battery, how much of battery life can we expect?

The U41JF can now be imported from Taiwan here. Seems like it comes with an Imation 320GB external hard drive and an extra 2GB stick of RAM (4GB total on this configuration). Many users here (including myself) have purchased Acer 3820TG units from PChome without issues.

    Any takers? ;)

Looks like some variants of these notebooks are coming somewhat soon (ETA: December 21, 2010) and are available for pre-order. Prices look quite reasonable for the specs, though it appears the first models will only be available with Core i3 processors.

Thanks for that. The prices are right in line with what I was expecting which is good news.

Now for a potentially really stupid question. I searched and didn't find an answer. The enter key, I noticed, has a couple different sizes and shapes depending on which web site's photos you're viewing. Is it a regional thing, the shape of the enter key? How would we know for sure which version we're getting? If the enter key is the wrong shape it's a deal-breaker for me.

I think it will still come with a normal enter key, but I'm not entirely sure. The tall enter key shows up often on the keyboards of laptops that are found on ASUS's global site, but they usually (always?) revert to the normal keyboard layout when it comes to the laptops that are sold in the US. I think that tall enter key design is more commonly found in the Europe region.

You can see a Taiwanese (I presume) model of the U41JF with the normal sized enter key here.

I don't think it has esata. I saw in the Asus site that they do list it, but in all the other sites I've seen it listed on they don't mention esata. All the pictures I have seen looks like esata is not on the U41

I must agree with you, from the pics available (all of those are taken from the ASUS site) there is no visible indication of a USB/eSata combo, or even a much less common eSata port

where can we have more information on this? do you guys know if it will be available in Canada soon?

I am debating between this model or the u45jc. Both the i3 models interest me (as i can't seem to find i5 for each). Amazon.ca you can already pre-order the u41jf but they aren't giving information as whether the product will be in stock..

It really depends on what the main purpose of the laptop will be for you. If you want to play any modern games though, I would definitely go with the U41. The 310M is long overdue for retirement. With the U41 you get pretty much the same size specifications and a much more powerful gpu for about the same price. Battery life for the U45 would probably be a bit better battery life because of the weaker 310M.

I think the release date for the U41jf is Dec. 21.

Bit the bullet and put in an order from ExcaliberPC for a U41JF-A1. Hopefully these things will actually ship on the 21st so I have a new toy by Christmas. Will post a mini-review upon receipt and tinkering with the unit.

I think I'll pick one up after Christmas. I really want the i5 model but I figure I'll just get the i3 and install the i5 580M myself. I wanted to put my own TIM on it anyway. I also want to confirm that it does have esata before I get it.

Looking forward to your mini review.

I'll check for an eSATA port whenever I get mine. I also originally wanted the i5 model, but my need for better battery life outweighs my desire for greater processing power. But the GT 425m will be key since I will play a couple games that would need it (i.e. - Starcraft II and Civilization V). But on this subject, are the CPU's not typically soldered onto the mainboard in ASUS laptops? As in, it is actually possible to upgrade the CPU's? If so, that's great in the case that I may want to do this a year or so down the line.

I'll let you know if a CPU whine is still there. My hearing is quite sensitive to higher frequencies so if my unit has one, I should know straight away.

As for is it worth the upgrade from a U45JC? Well, I would say yes if you do any light gaming. The main draw of the U41JF is the inclusion of a GT 425m while maintaining the U series' thin profile.

I hope the CPU isn't soldered. I saw on the U series Bamboo thread that the U43 isn't soldered, but the U33 is. The UL series CPUs seem to be soldered. The U30 and N43 to name a few are also not soldered. I'm thinking and hoping that this laptop doesn't have a soldered cpu.

you can order it from excaliber they deliver in Brazil (Im also from there)

    gentech delivers it too.

BTW the difference between the gt415 to the gt425m appears to be a major one, I would still wait for the SB chips in jan, as Im doing, but I would definitely grab the u41 instead od the u31.

Unless you go for a refreshed u36

The U31JG's 415M doesn't compare to the 3820TG's 5650/6550, so I'm assuming you're thinking about the U41JF? But in that case, couldn't you just pick up a 4820TG? The i5 variants of the 4820TG are running for $750-800 in the US....

Called Excaliber PC yesterday and they said the 12/21 "ETA" was ONLY AN ESTIMATE on availability (bummer!)

Anyone know anything more about availability in the US yet? I do not want to import this thing, but want one ASAP..

Also want to ideally buy from a reseller with a "no questions asked" return policy like Gentech appears to have, just in case..seems to be WAY too many issues with just about every brand out there (whining CPUs, dead pixels, bad build quality)..MOST units are good, but I really would prefer to have that option, just in case..

I just spoke with ExcaliberPC and the representative informed me that the date has currently been pushed back to January 4. I actually just cancelled my order for now and may or may not reorder it if it's available at that time. I may just go with something else. Sorry folks!

I'm looking for the Asus U41JF in black. Asus' site has it in black, and you can order it in black here but you have to not only wait for it to ship from Taiwan, but also pay about $1,100USD.

Anyone know where/when I can get this thing in black for a similar price to the silver version in the US?

That's some major wishful thinking imo :p

not much, since that the gt540m is just a rebranded gt 435m, which also means it is the same chip of the gt425m with slightly higher clocks.

My guess is that this is going to be another disappointing year for Nvidia fans

I told Amazon of a lower price through EXcaliberPC and it seems they've lowered the pre-order price to $849.00, which seems to be a great deal for Californians (no sales tax).

Now it's just a question of when it comes...

Ok, so as I said I got this model two weeks ago. I'm really happy with my purchase. Those who said that it doesn't have e-sata were right. Shame on Asus as they give deceptive specifications! As I am very busy these days I don't have time to write a full review, but you can check it here: Notebookcheck.pl: Recenzja Asus U41JF
It's in polish, but you can easily translate it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Is it still worth it to get this laptop?

of course, what i'm referring to is with the new sandy bridge technology.

i waited two months for this laptop and SB to come out so there can be concrete comparisons and data.

if SB is not too much better (battery life not "that" much better, performance not "that" much better), i think i'll settle for this laptop, cause afaik, i3 and i5 SB isn't out yet, and i don't want to wait 4 more months (random guess).
