I took out the screen for my laptop and hooked up this monitor.
AOC 21.5" IPS LED HD Monitor I2269VW - Best Buy
When i installed it, it worked full 1080 and was ok.
Then i restarted and it displayed 1/2 screens in the display options all of sudden and wont display any other option other then 1020/768. Both the laptop and monitor are 1080 and worked fine when i plugged it in.
The laptop no longer has a screen since it broke i also unplugged the inverter cable. It worked fine until a restart.

How do i get back to the way it was when i first plugged it in?

Try reinstalling the video driver for your N56VZ (either reinstall the existing driver version, or update it if applicable). The built-in monitor's resolution has no bearing on the resolution of an external display.
