I'm in the UK but have family in the states, so if cheaper I can purchase over there and one of them will either post it or bring it over.

I was certain I was going to buy the N56JR until I spotted the N550JV.

There are two things I find attractive about it, that is the sleeker design and the IPS screen, the slightly weaker graphics card is probably negligible for my needs although I do want gaming power.

Things I don't like and I don't want is the touchscreen or glossy screen, also I cannot seem to see where the fans pump hot air out of the laptop from, is it in the base? If it is I think I will pass on the N550JV, I'm often using my laptop in bed with a tray so need the fan pushing hot air out from the sides or rear not the bottom or restricted by having an intake in the bottom.

Note: I'll also be downgrading the laptop from Win 8 to Win 7 Ultimate as I can get a cheap copy over here.

The only N550JV I can find over in the UK is in the glossy touch screen version (thats in Curry's at £580), my budget is $1000 max or £600. The N56JR I can only find in the States.

So having said all this, any idea where I can purchase a non glossy non-touch N550JV in the UK or an N56JR for that budget? Likewise what are good retailers in the States, I know of microcenter only.

P.S. I'm not in a rush to buy and if there was an N550JV with a better graphics card scheduled would happily wait.

Yea I might just go for the N56JR. It has wide view 150 degree panels which I think may be enough to watch a film with someone else in bed, so the IPS won't be too much of an upgrade.

Will downgrading to Win 7 Utlimate be possible or will this be an issue?

Lastly anyone know where I can find one in the UK for $1000/£600?

N550JV-DB71 is not a touch screen, just a matte IPS. The N550JV-DB72T is the touchscreen version which is the one you want to stay away from.

I just got the N550JV touchscreen model and it's amazing. The screen is insane. I used the laptop for an hour or two yesterday on my bed and the laptop was cool on the bottom. I'm pretty sure the air flows out of the back and along the screen.

Keep in mind that I think the N56 is plastic while the N550JV is all aluminum.

:) But it is glossy and I am allergic to gimmickery and Win8!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this the other way around N56 is all aluminium and N550 is mostly aluminium with a little plastic here and there?

Anyone know where are N56JR can be had in the Uk for the same price as in the US? Circa £600?

Okay so you may not use the touch screen that much. Just get the matte version then.

The N56 is completely plastic and the N550JV is all aluminum. The matte version has a plastic frame around the screen I believe.

Honestly I don't understand the hate towards windows 8. It's faster and everything just feels smoother. Also HiDPI support is a lot better in W8 than W7. I was going to install a start menu but I've changed my mind as it's incredibly easy to just the windows key and type for what you want. Plus keypad gestures make everything faster.

I hardly used the start menu in W7 as my most used apps are always pinned to the taskbar. Because of this I don't miss the start menu at all. So I think I'm a part of the majority of people who hate W8 it seems. Honestly while W8 isn't perfect all means, I believe it's a lot better than W7. I think it's the best OS available right now (sorry Linux users). Just try it for a week or two (it took me a couple of days).

Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this thread around like that.

    hello,
the N56 is not plastic at all !!, the only part on the N56 that it is not aluminium is the black part under the laptop, and this part in the N550 is a mix between plastic and metal.

if you need more gaming power go for the N56jr , i just ordred one today here in France.

my friend had the N550 and i found the N56 looking better + i hate the grey keyboard.

I use to own both N56jr and n550jv db71 matte non touch version and they are both aluminum. The n550jv is slightly lighter and slimmer but has a way weaker ddr3 gt 750m gpu which explains the thinner profile, the n550jv also has that grey keyboard where backlit is useless since you can hardly see the letterings. Another bad thing about the n550jv is the speakers balancing sound where it's either louder on the left or right.

The speaker balance and audio quality is way better on the n56jr and this time the keyboard is color black where the backlit matches perfectly and it has a much faster gtx gddr5 760m. The only bad thing or negative thing I noticed on the n56jr is the slight missing keystrokes when typing too fast but I heard a bios update fixed that issue.

I don't have this issue. Could it be a software our hardware issue?
