I've owned this laptop for a few months now and I today, when I tried to plug a USB 3.0 external HDD into the machine, I couldn't get it to read when using the single USB port on the right side of the laptop (I got an error about it malfunctioning). The drive would power on and all that, but the OS would recognize it only for a second then it would disappear, occasionally with some error about it being inaccessible. The two adjacent USB ports on the left don't have this issue. That said, every other USB device I've used works fine on all three of the ports, so I'm not really sure what's up. I tried rebooting, reloading BIOS defaults and nothing changed. Anyone have any ideas?

It sounds as though it was disconnected unexpectedly from that port. When you connect a PnP device, Windows loads the driver for that device on that particular port. If the driver malfunctioned, you can try connecting the device to that port, uninstall the driver specifically for the device, then reconnect it. Windows should reload the driver.

Yeah, the first time I plugged it in, it was only part way, so that sounds reasonable. I'm not all that concerned, but I'd be annoyed if the port were faulty.
