I've had a G71G-A2 for a little under a month now (got it around December 27) and I'm having a touchpad issue.

Every time I reboot the computer it resets the touchpad settings to the orignial default settings and I'm trying to stop this from happening.

I went to the Synaptics website and they said there could be a problem with third party drivers, so I removed the Logitech laser mouse drivers that I had added seperately.

This didn't fix the problem so I went to the Asus website after calling tech-support, got the touchpad drivers and re-installed them. Still no resolution.

I haven't tried completely removing the touchpad drivers and re-installing since I'm afriad I'll lose all functionality and won't be able to operate the cursor at all and then will be unable to reinstall anyway.

I'm getting pretty frustrated and starting to consider a wipe and clean with the rescue disks, but of course these means I'll lose all saved game progress etc... and really just don't want to go through the headache.

    Any ideas?

If you completely remove trackpad drivers Microsoft default drivers should take over. Though you'll lose scrollbar functionality.

Also try the latest drivers. I believe they're version 10 or 11.

Then try completely uninstalling the drivers, rebooting then reinstalling the drivers.

    Thanks aethelbert

Okay, so I uninstalled the touchpad drivers, made sure the Logitech drivers are gone and rebooted.

Checked to make sure the Synaptics drivers are gone (which they were) and the installed the latest from Asus website. This was done successfully and I'm up to date.

Set the pointer speed option to fast and checked the box marked "enhance pointer precision" (this is the way I like it) and then hit apply and okay.

Exit and restart. Then, again, on restart I'm dismayed to find the pointer speed has reset to default and the pointer precision box is now unmarked.

The only thing I can see that's leftover from Logitech is some sort of legacy item that shows on the start up program menu THAT I CANNOT REMOVE with Windows. The program is gone and it seems to be some sort of nonfunctional item, but it is there.

Now, I know this isn't a "huge deal" but it's bad enough I have to suffer a touchpad (I'm a ThinkPad guy) and this stuff really should work properly.

The Asus techs seem next to clueless so I'm kind of at a loss here.

This is odd. I run Setpoint next to my slightly modified trackpad drivers (I use the Acer ones that allow chiral motion & momentum...both of which I no longer use) and it works fine. I even run both at the same time (having set zones of the trackpad to execute certain programs commands etc.). I'm thinking there something wrong inside windows itself.

Can I ask if the Synaptics settings remain the same when the computer is rebooted? Not the Microsoft mouse settings but the Synaptics settings themselves.

Have you tried a system restore back to a point where these drivers worked?

I tried a system restore to the day before I put the Logitech drivers into the machine. This failed, however, I haven't tried other system restore points (should this be done in safe-mode?)

As for Synaptics other settings, I just set the double-click setting to its lowest option and turned off the option to have the pointer automatically move to the default button in the dialog box.

Guess what, I restarted the computer and these settings STAYED in place, so it's really seems to be just pointer speed and "enhance pointer precision" - both of which I like to customize of course.

Very strange indeed. I'm thinking of reloading the Logitech drivers and see if I can get the two to just play nice together

Ah ha! System restore finally worked and actually corrected the problem. First time I've seen system restore do anything of value...maybe Vista not all bad.

I'm having a touch pad problem with my G71G-A1. The left-click functionality doesn't work at all, the touch pad double-tap does not function as primary click, and the touchpad horizontal & vertical scrolling does not work anymore. I tried uninstalling the Synaptics touchpad drivers, tried the original drivers that came with the driver CD, and the latest drivers from the ASUS website, and even tried in Vista Safe Mode & Windows 7, but still no luck. I even tried the quickboot into the ASUS media center, but the left-click still did not work.

Go to Control Panel > Mouse > <Synaptic Logo> Device Settings and go to buttons. Is Enable Buttons selected? If not activate and check under it's submenu whether Left Click and Right click are properly assigned.

Then, whilst the window is open, go to tapping and check if Tapping is Enabled. If not, activate it. If both of these are in fact activated then perhaps it's a hardware issue?

Yes, it is enabled under Device Settings. I even tried the default settings under" Settings...", but still no luck. Unfortunately it does look like a hardware issue. That's two hardware issues in under a month of owning it.
