Hey everyone, I've been playing games, specifically Burnout Paradise, on my laptop and it tends to freeze up, go to black screen, then come back. Either that or it goes to black screen and then forces me to quit the program.

Also, it's not unreasonable for my laptop to see temps of 80-85 Celsius. Is this alright?

Just a first-time laptop buyer here and I'm not quite happy with my gaming performance.

BTW, I'm on the DOX optimized 182.05 drivers(which fixed black screening on COD4).

Any help would be appreciated, and I would also like to know if I should overclock my 9800m gs to the gts. Thanks.

you see your laptop go up to 80-85C when on idle or on load? Or on gaming? If its on gaming than it is normal... When i game on my Asus F6 (specifically COD5) i get about 89C max (gpu heat measured by CPUID). So if its on gaming than it is normal, if its on idle than something is not.

When i first got my F6 the idle was 30's for GPU than after 3 months it went up to 40's (on load), now its in the 50's on load.

Ways to decrease the heat from your GPU is to clean your fan, make sure nothing is blocking its port, maybe get a laptop cooler (if im not mistaken, a user posted a very good guide about buying laptop cooler). If you cannot afford a laptop cooler, you can always try to put underneath it and raise it a few degree so air can get under it (plus the fan can blow air out through bottom better.

As fair black screen, i am not sure what is going on. Maybe it is the GPU driver?

Yes, those temps are when I'm gaming. I hit those temps on COD4 with pretty low settings.

As far as the black screen, that's probably my main concern. It's lame when you're about to pull the trigger on a headshot, the screen goes black, it comes back and you're dead. I almost smashed my laptop to pieces. >:[

Your GPU doesn't seem to show any signs of overheating, and those black screen issues seem to be software related. I would try use a different (newer) VGA driver from laptopvideo2go.

If I were you, I would clean the DOX driver and install NVIDIA 185.85. I installed NVIDIA 185.85 first, it run very well. And then, I used driver sweeper and give DOX 185.85 a try. Awfully, it freeze when I put the laptop to sleep mode. And gaming performance reduced. So I back to NVIDIA driver and everything back to the best again. I don't tend to try different driver because I don't have lots of time. Just NVIDIA's.

Anyone else agree that I should go to the nvidia 185.85 drivers? I just installed the DOX 185.20 drivers and got roughly 45 fps in COD4. I'll experiment again after I get back from the party I'm going to right now.

Also, if anyone wants to save me making a new thread, is there I way I can make the laptop dual-boot Windows XP from the ExpressGate button? If not, whatever but I want to learn to dual-boot at least.

I switched to dox 185.85 and I saw smoother gameplay in WAW and assassin's creed.

I used to have a G50VT-X1, i game on it really much, once 3 x 24 hours straight, it runs well on GTA 4 all maximum, crysis on all maximum, even sometime the nvidia driver stopped working, but now, 3 months ago, it suddenly wont come on after standby, it turns on, but only the sound of the ROG logo when u first boot the computer, the screen stays black, and keep restarting, first i thought it was the screen but it wasnt, i sent it to my dealer, i paid $300 USD to change new motherboard, they said the problem solved, but when i turned it back on in netherlands, it still have the goddamn same problem, i gave up on it, it now sitting in my room doing nothing, i bought a G60J, and im quite satisfied with it.. i really miss my g50vt-x1 though.. :(
