Well the deal to buy the used G50 fell through, but I'm kinda glad. You never know what you're getting.
Anyway, do I wait and buy this laptop in the next month or so after the bugs are worked, if there are any? I'm not in a rush to buy one and I'm curious as to what improvements they'll make on this laptop when they release the so called improved version.
Thoughts?
-
I haven't heard of any bugs myself, and have only read some good reviews by ViciousXUSMC and others. You can always wait for the next model, and it will probably be better, but if you want/need it now, I would get the G50V.
I own the X1, so I can't personally comment on the A1. -
yo what happened? is it the one Toshiba dude was selling?
-
Now I'm on the fence. Just wondering if the price will come down. -
ToshibaDude sold me the laptop.
Unfortunately, I guess he didn't know but the mini LCD above the keyboard was dead on arrival. Now I'm dealing with ASUS and hopefully getting a replacement unit in the coming days, just sent it out today. Guess we'll see.
He was a pleasure to deal with but it would have been nice if he had known ahead of time about the LCD, but hey, it's within 30 days so it's not like I can't get it replaced anyhow.
Great guy though. -
Could be an oversight on his part. -
As to G50 bugs, you may want to check the G50 keyboard problems thread. Some people report keyboard lag and multiple key combinations do not work.
ASUS is working on a BIOS fix. A beta has been released, which possibly has fixed the keylag issue. -

So you had to pay to ship it to back to ASUS?
When did you get the laptop? This is what he told me last Wednesday, 3 Sept 08:
"Darryl, I'm going to wait until Monday to ship the laptop. Reason being is that it is going to have to sit somewhere during the whole weekend if I ship tomorrow, and, in my experience in working at a post office, things have gone missing from Canada Post during the weekend. I hope this is ok with you, I just want to be safe rather than sorry.
I inspected the laptop and everything was pristine. Not a single scratch on the unit. No dead pixels and everything works. I haven't installed a game yet, so I can't comment on that.
I included the invoice, along with a signed letter by me, and my dad, confirming the $1500 price tag."
The box is taped up and ready to go, on Monday that is. -

That new bios seems to have wiped any keyboard lag that I could detect, no fix for the multi key press issue yet. However the main combo that anybody may ever use is the s+d+space and I personally have not used it yet to have a problem.

I received the laptop this past Friday, and it was sent on Thursday.
It was shipped CanadaPost Express (where he works) from London, ON to where I live in the Greater Toronto Area.
Everything worked great with no scratches/dead pixels of any kind, the unit looked brand new. The only exception was the dead on arrival OLED display. During a p hone call after I found out about the problem he said he'd never tested it and simply assumed it had to be turned on, which is not the case. Seemed more like an oversight than anything.
ASUS paid for overnight shipping and picked up the laptop at my house on Monday after calling in on the weekend and they said the whole process should be 3-5 business days and the new/replacement unit will be sent via Fedex overnight shipping to my house as soon as they confirm the display is dead or something.
Hoping it works out nice. -
I wish Toshibadude would have been up front with me about the whole thing. Totally his right as the seller to sell it to whom ever he choses, but I could of ordered one last week avoiding the $50.00 price increase.
It wasn't until Moday evening did he tell me he led me on.
Oh well. -
Dazman,
Yea, I hear you. I too was considering buying it from Toshiba dude, even PM'd him but I waited too long and now he's sold it and the prices in Toronto have gone up.
There's a Toronto retailer here that will match the all-in prices of buying from out of province i.e. you save the PST and shipping while getting instant purchase gratification. But you gotta pay cash. That's about the best I've been able to find.
but still on the fence given all these keyboard/video stutter issues. Plus the new NP8660 review from Chaz has made me reconsider.
**** indecision is plaguing me! -

benbronco, do you own a bronco? -
that sounds expensive, i'd probably get only 2GB of RAM, install more RAM later with cheaper aftermarket options.
I was thinking of buying from Xoticpc by pricematching with PCTorque, maybe they will let me buy it without a HDD and just buy aftermarket which would save $50-60 cheaper for the 320GB 7200rpm drive.

no, i don't have a bronco -
If you buy from the USA then you pay full taxes and you'll have to have it shipped via USPS to avoid brokerage fees.
-
still cheaper.
-
You're right, but what killed it for me is that you have to send it back to the USA for warranty work. You can't beat ASUS on their warranty and that was the clincher for me.
-
How did you make out with the laptop?
Did you have to pay to ship it to ASUS?
How was the service?
