$750 seems like a fair price, but you can purchase one from ebay for $730 shipped + an additional 8% discount if you use Bing.com's cashback promotion.

I'm getting my 50VT-X5 that way. I search for "dvd burner" on bing and it takes me to tigerdirect. Once you're in the store, the bing cashback works everywhere. At that time it still had a 10.3% discount, so I have about a $74 cashback that is pending. If I factor that in it the net cost is ~$665.

I think for the 50VT's that sub-$700 is worth it for a refurb. Crossing my fingers that there are no major problems.

How do these two stack up against one another? What kind of performance gap is there between the

9800GT (flashed to GTS) vs. GTX 260m
Screens the G51 has an LED? I saw one and really wasn't too impressed, haven't seen the G50 screen.
CPU upgradeable? Apparently this can be done in the G50 how about the G51?

There is a noticed gap in performance, but from what I've heard is that it is not too extreme. Ask yourself what you want to "do" with it, I guess. I wanted something to play WoW and Fallout 3 (older games) between two households, so I went with the G50Vt. The money I saved will be going into the desktop fund for future titles. If you want to be futureproofed a bit longer without a desktop go for the G51.

The CPU is upgradeable and overclockable for both G50/G51.

X1 has 100Mhz more processor speed (2.25ghz) As Clutch mentioned in his X5 review thread:
It goes down to preference too. The X1 I believe has a blue-bolt cover. The X5 has yellow bolts.

Wow, isn't $665 after bing cashback on tigerdirect a fantastic price or is it just me?

Does this notebook have the same high heat buildup that the new G51 has?

Also, wondering how it stacks up in game vs gtx260 ?

    As already mentioned, yes.

However, as of this moment, there is no quad support for the G50 series, and there is no plans for it to be implemented.

The G51 can support quads, or at least they will. The few people who have tried to quad it have been met with problems, probably BIOS related.

There is a noticeable difference. I can run at native resolution at high settings (with textures set to extra high for giggles) and it plays very smoothly. (I overclocked both the CPU and the GPU for this).

With my G50vt-X6 (Which has a more powerful processor), I could run at a mix of medium-high settings at 1200-ish resolution, also with CPU and GPU overclocking. It was smooth, but it was far lesser settings.

Early reports were that the heat buildup in the G51 was higher than the G50, which makes sense when you consider the video card being put in the G51.

    I bought the G50-X1 for $690 a couple months back because the alternative was a G50-X5 new for $899. Even with the 260M, I think a G50-X1 refurb for <$700 shipped&tax is better than a G51 for >$1k after tax and/or shipping.

The X5's horrible color choices compared to the color scheme of the X1 didn't hurt either.

It seems to me that you'll get excellent value upgrading your laptop every year when the refurbs pop up than buying one of these laptops when they're new and keeping it 2+ years.

For less than the money you pay for a G51 new, you can also get a Gateway FX refurb (if you can find them in stock), too, though that decision is you choosing between the larger screen or the better video element.

Hell, next year you'll probably be able to get the G71 refurbs for what we're paying now for these G50 refurbs.

On the question of battery vs 100mhz, I took the 100mhz. You might not notice it, but I'd notice the battery life less because I 99% use my laptop plugged into the wall. And I'm not one of those people who likes risking his >$600 investments trying to get 2-5 more frames per second in a game already making my G50's innards hot enough to fry an egg by overclocking its CPU or flashing its BIOS with modified speed increases.

So for me, the extra 100mhz is nice to have. :p
