I had my G1S running on ac adapter only when the power went out for about a second yesterday. Now when I press power, the only thing that happens is it displays the ASUS logo on the direct console OLED display. Nothing at all happens on-screen. I'm at work now so I can't try to figure it out, but did something bad happen due to the power outage, or is there something simple I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any help.

try removing the battery and then press the power button for a few seconds, then re-install the battery and see what happens!

Sounds like it could have been hit by a power surge

I still recommend trying this before deciding that a hardware fault has happened.

Unfortunately the trick did not work. What exactly might a power surge damage and, assuming it's a hardware fault, should I contact Asus? To make matters worse I think the laptop is out of warranty. Also, any way to retrieve the data on it?

Assuming the HDD isn't dead, you can put it into an external 2.5" sata enclosure.

Yours is already out of warranty? Doesn't Asus ship the G1S with 2 years standard? The G1s isn't even that old yet ...

To recover your data, check my Tips and Tricks for some suggestions. The enclosure is the easiest thing, if you have it or you can buy it nearby.

I'm afraid then that the power surge did actually kill something in the laptop. Most likely culprits: the motherboard, or the GPU, but it's impossible to tell for sure... you need to send it to ASUS I'm afraid.

Does the laptop seem to boot up, is there HDD activity after the ASUS logo appears on the OLED? If so, it may only be the GPU or LCD.

Turns out I have a Best Buy model (G1S-X1) so I've been advised to check with them first. E.B.E., the HDD makes that grinding noise that it usually makes when the notebook is first turned on, after that I can't tell since nothing else happens. Many things are still fuctional - the fans seems to be running, I can open the optical drive and the indicator lights on the bottom are on. Also, does anyone have a guide to removing the HDD? As is obvious, I'm completely new to the procedure.

Removing the HDD will void your warranty.

You can remove it like this.

    1. Take off the HDD panel cover (2 screws).
    2. You should see a piece of rubber connected to some black string. Pull the rubber part up so its not longer blocking movement of the HDD.
    3. Slide the HDD back and you can then remove the HDD drive cage.
    4. The HDD is held in the drive cage by 4 screws.

Would it ?! I think NOT. There's no "voiding" seal there and there are only 2 screws on the panel cover

Read the manual that came with your notebook.

Yes the manual says that but it has been well established here for a long time, with many users sending in their units for repair etc, that the two upgrades that DO NOT void Asus' warranty are HDD and RAM removal/replacement.

Negz is simply inaccurate on that point.

Hmm...I have it in my office, but AFAIK replacing HDD or RAM doesn't void the warranty. Besides, there's no "warranty void" seal there, how will Asus know if your HDD has been detached ?

AFAIK there is no way for them to know unless you physically damage the screws etc. It is the same as voiding your warranty through overclocking, dishonest people get away with it. Replacing the Ram does not void the warranty.

Technically removing HDD and RAM voids warranty, practically noone at ASUS cares, as long as any upgraded HDD/RAM don't cause failures :)

To the OP: one easy thing to do is, if you have an external monitor, connect the laptop to it via VGA port, and see if the monitor shows anything. If it does, then only the screen is bad. Another thing is to check for HDD activity by looking at the HDD light; does it blink after the notebook is started up?

But first of all, you should really back up your data, if possible. Then you can continue troubleshooting.

So I ended up sending the laptop directly to Asus and I have to say I'm impressed with their service. Took me ~5 days to ship to them, took them only a day to fix it and overnight it back. Looks like they replaced the motherboard. All my data is still intact (though I did buy an external enclosure and backed it up before sending it in). Should I expect to be charged for this? I was expecting a bill since the laptop's out of warranty (1-yr Best Buy) but there was no such thing. Anyways, thanks again for the advice here.
