Hey, I'm having a problem w/ my built in laptop speakers.

    a) I KNOW they work. They work every time I turn the laptop on. They make the BIOS sound correctly *every* time.

    b) Headphones and External Speakers work fine.

    c) Before, when I plugged in speakers and so forth, a little pop up would appear saying "A jack has been plugged in." This no longer appears.

    d) All the levels are up, nothing is muted, and when I play music, the volume moves up and down on the volume select.

I'm using Vista 32, and I've reinstalled the drivers like 3 times. Can anyone help me?

    *update*

I'm beginning to get worried... The "Jack has been plugged in" dialog appears for every jack except the main out...

So this one is broken somehow. I'm *praying* that it's not hardware. I don't want to go through getting that fixed. Has anyone any experience here?

So is your problem just the fact that it doesn't say "jack has been plugged in?" What doesn't work? Mine doesn't always say that either, but no other issues.

No... It's stuck in "headphone/external" mode. When you plug in a speaker (normally) the builtin's mute, and the jack is enabled. When you remove it, the sound starts going to the builtin's again.

Mine is stuck in "headphone mode", so I can't hear any sound unless my headphones are in. It's getting really frustrating. If you have any advice, I'd really appreciate it.

I maybe wrong here but the fact that the speakers work when starting the computer suuggests its not a hardware problem, so that just leaves it being a software problem. Seeing as youve uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers means its not a driver problem. So could it be that is a os system fault?
A real long shot but try a system restore to a point where you know it was working.
Hmm Im using a g2s does the g1s have the same realtek control panel?
If it does try messing with some of the settings.
Otherwise only thing I can think of is a format and reinstall of vista.

I can´t make my speakers to work (unsure if it´s only the speakers or even the sound in headphones) when bring my G1S out of sleeping mode. Usually I just restart the computer when it does that, haven´t bothered.

That's a common problem, happens to me all the time. For some reason the sound drivers don't load when coming out of sleep mode.

Asus posted new audio drivers on the 14th. If you haven't got them yet, I would give them a try.

Just make sure you uninstall existing and delete existing before you run the new installer. If you don't, they probably won't update.

Greetings, I am having the EXACT same problem on my G2S for the last two days, and let me give you a hint right now: Do not uninstall the Realtek HD Manager! I have no idea how to re-install it. As for my speakers, they do not make the sound at bios boot, but they will make it through the headphones, as they have done before. The ASUS forums and support has been unhelpful due to their "server overloads" recently, so I thought I would ask for help here, and help find a way to fix this problem. After getting into an auto accident, getting my laptop back to normal without having to send it away would make my day.

Do you mean these drivers? It says they were updated yesterday, which is awesome, however, all sites for both zipped and executable versions seem to be down, as of post time.

EDIT: I found a site with the drivers, but this did not solve my particular problem. It may solve the original poster's problem, but it did not solve mine, sadly. I'd really like a fix, and ASUS is impossible to get ahold of.

Sorry for bumping this topic with a double post, but I'd like to update everyone and propose a solution to those with the similar-yet-not-as-severe problem as mine.

First off, I will say I got in contact with Asus Notebook support, and I will in fact be shipping it back to Asus. Also, it was shocking to find out "ASUS" was pronounced "AYE-SUSE" and "AYE-SYS". I'm not sure why I had been pronouncing it wrong over the years, but it was intresting to note. I was sent RMA information via e-mail, and Asus has their own FedEx account for which to ship the laptop! All I needed to do was buy the packing materials and uninstall everything I didn't want them to sniff around. Oh, that and deleting passwords so they can login to the laptop once they get it. But enough about my problem, as it is getting the solution I dreaded, here is what I propose to you:

    • First thing is to uninstall your audio drivers in the device manager.
    • Next, you need to download your G1S chipset from the official Asus website. Here is the download link.
    • After extracting the files to whatever folder you want, open the run box by pressing the Win key + R, or open it from the task manager.
    • Next, type in the location of the "setup.exe" you have just extracted, and add the " -overall" parameter.
Mine looked something similar to "C:\ASUS\INFUpdate_vista_070514\Setup.exe -overall" because I was installing the G2S chipset.
    • As you go through the install, things will look funky because it will be reloading all your hardware (or pretty much all of it). So please be aware, the following things will be reloaded (if not more) so please do not do this if you have anything being used by these devices currently: USB, MemoryCard Reader, ASUS Direct Flash and Messenger, Wireless Card, Bluetooth, eSata port, IrDa, HDMI/VGA/S-Video ports (also your own graphics card, it will change to a very BIG resolution, then change back), PCIMe slot, and a few other things.
    • Theoretically, this should reload all hardware settings, and may reload all settings for those devices. All my bluetooth devices and wireless networks were still on the system, so no settings were lost there. I did notice that the Asus Direct Console had turned on my Direct Flash when I had previously turned it off, but that was the only difference it made.
    • After a restart, go ahead and load up the official Asus sound drivers. Here's a quick link to them for you.

That should do it! If it doesn't work, I cant' say I didn't try. Also, please do not hold me accountable for any damage this does to your system (reloading drivers doing damage, huh?) and attempt it at your own risk. I hope it does work out for people having this problem however, so they too don't have to ship their notebooks back to Asus as well. Good luck!

Hey guys, I've got a solution to this problem that I happened to find out this morning. I'm not sure if this is how it works or not, but when your computer is stuck in headphone mode, you max out the volume, leave it a bit, till the watery effect is gone, then turn the volume all the way down, wait a bit, then back to your normal level. This kinda worked for me, though I'm not sure if this is what I did completely, if it doesn't work plug the headphone in and out once and then try again? Heh, well it gets my sound on my Asus working, I'm using the official ASUS audio drivers.

I can't remember the exact date I got my laptop back....

But the problem just happened again... minutes ago...

I took out my headphones to dance before quitting time because people were dancing with their cell phone ringtones, why not some laptop music love? No sound... I panicked. It couldn't have happened again, right? I reboot. Bios sound, oh thank god. I listen to some music... it cuts out into dead silence... reboot... no bios sound....... I really REALLY don't want ANOTHER RMA because I've had the laptop back for so much longer this time.... I will be contacting ASUS after this reply. . .

EDIT: I got the laptop back October 16th. Not even 2 months again.... wow...

I have the same problem. Realtek is stuck in Stereo mode and I cant get sound through the internal speakers. Only headphones.

I have a G2S-B1, and am not happy about this.

Hello everyone. I just thought I'd give a little tip that prolonged my speaker life for about a month before this trick stopped working permanently:

This is a motherboard connection issue. This MUST be the case, as Asus replaced my speakers, they probably refitted a connection tighter, and it must have jumped loose again.

However, when my speakers suddenly went out while in Windows, I would restart the computer. When the BIOS splash screen explosion is happening, wiggle an audio jack in and out of the headphone jack until you hear parts of the explosion from your speakers. This worked nearly every time for me, until recently that is. I will have to send my laptop back again finally. I'll also request that Asus actually diagnose the problem thoroughly, and tell me exactly what was going on so I can repost that information here.

Good luck for anyone else who has similar issues.

    I've just had a development.

Today My ASUS Live Update alerted me to a BIOS update. I let it update and when I rebooted the ASUS logo played sound through my built-in speakers. After this, I hear a pop sound from the speakers and windows loads with no sound playing through the speakers. The Realtek HD Audio Manager also still displays the speakers stuck in Stereo mode (greyed out, cant click).

I just had that update too... I wish it also came with a changelog, heh...

Anyway, does the bios splash screen still make sound? If so, you could try some of the fixes in this thread or in other related threads. If not, try my little headphones trick, and see if that works.

Another temporary solution I have is I bought bluetooth headphones. Almost as good, if not better quality than the speakers, and I have free range movement again. But I will be contacting ASUS shortly, and ask them if the whole motherboard can be replaced, not just the speakers. There's no way you could blow the speakers out with the volume max, they're not the greatest quality, but I'm sure their decibel limit is a lot higher than they produce.

I have this problem since 5 days and I tried all solutions mentioned in this thread.

This must be a software problem, during the bios splash I plug in and out the headphone 2-3 times and it switch instandly to headphone-speaker-headphon. So speaker, jack detection, headphone everything is working.

There must be a setting in Vista or soundmanager causing this problem.

The ASUS hotline is absolute useless!!!

Are there any news, updates, solutions??????

    Vista Ultimate 32b

The speakers no longer make the explosion sound through the speakers during the ASUS logo splash screen. It just made the sound a few times after BIOS update. Now its back to no speaker sound.

My G2S will need to go back to ASUS repair for a motherboard replacement I think.

How about reverting to the old BIOS, if the new BIOS causes audio problems? That might solve the problem (sorry if it's been already suggested and it doesn't work)

Much easier than going back to ASUS.

How about assuming that it is because of the new BIOS like cargo, and trying my suggestion? It's not difficult and it might work. Otherwise, you can start looking for other solutions.

I got the same issue (actually twice, read below) with my v1s
The built-in Speakers were muted and the external speakers or headphone were ok. And yes, the Asus boot screen was also playing a sound with the built-in speakers too.
All the details are here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=215427
To make it short, Asus changed the motherboard and it's still not functioning properly...I've sent them back again...A nightmare

I have the same problem with no sound on my G1S, and ya all they are probably going to do is keep switching the motherboard until your warranty runs out. Since Apple uses motherboard on their laptop if you do a search on google like no sound from speaker you will get a lot of macbook and macbook pro with the same problem.

Hi, ASUS warranty is pickupandreturn in most places, so they will pay for the shipping.

As for credit back, I'm afraid not. Perhaps they will replace the machine with a newer one after 2-3 failed repairs.

So if you want your money back, just sell it off ebay or something.

But really, this speaker issue sounds like a minor software/driver issue. Don't despair and get rid of the machine for this thing. Have you tried installing the sound card's manufacturer drivers? (Realtek or whatever)

My V1S had the same issue that you are experiencing with your G1. The built-in speakers were playing no sound while the headphones were ok. The very puzzling detail was that the built-in speakers were still able to play the boot sound if turned on in the bios. I spent to much time to fix this problem my self, I posted all the details here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2949629 . To make it short, I got it repaired two times by asus that had to change the motherboard each time to fix the problem. It was not a software problem but a real hardware problem then. The first "fix" lasted for few weeks before having the same issue back - again !- . The repair turn around was a real inconvinience, however, it took each time a week. If you send it on monday you should have it back on friday.

I can only think three things:
    1. Hardware (jack always detect somehting connected to it even though it's not there).
    2. Firmware: the logic to turn off the sound on speakers doens't work properly.
    3. Drivers.

    1. and 2. cannot be fixed by you. If you tried all the reasonable drivers and driver settings that you can think of (I'm sure I suggested some drivers), then it's send in RMA or keep it as it is, I'm afraid.

I have been having a similar problem. Often, after I take my headphones out of the jack or when the computer comes back from sleeping, the speakers will not work. I've tried restarting and that doesn't work...

but oddly the "raise volume to full and then lower to zero" trick works for me. It hasn't failed yet. And now I've noticed that if I mute the laptop, I can get sound back by doing the same thing... raising the volume and then lowering it.

I still have no clue how to fix this, but I thought I'd share my experience. This sucks for those of you that can't even temporarily fix this, I'm getting annoyed at having to change the volume all the time.. but that's not really that serious :p

I have the same problem with Asus G1S and Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

BIOS explosion sounds ok and headphones are working as well ok, but no sound through the internal speakers.

I have uninstalled Realtek drivers and reinstalled the latest version downloaded from the Realtek website. The version is now 6.0.1.5582, dated on 11 March 2008.

System restore did not help and I am quite confident, it is of no use to reinstall Vista.

It is evident that, for some unknown reason, Vista is not able to detect that the headphones have been unplugged. For sure, this is not a hardware problem.

I have run the notebook booting it into Ubuntu 7.10 from the Live boot disk and the speakers worked with no problems. I plugged in the headphones and the speakers were muted. Again, by unplugging the headphones, the speakers worked just as they should.

It is really disappointing to see that Asus is willing to replace the motherboard since there is really nothing wrong with the hardware.
Actually Asus should spend some time rewriting the audio drivers and test the drivers really thoroughly with every Vista hotfix published lately.

so what is your solution ???
does actually reinstalling the win vista help ???
or does it have sense to fool around with changing drivers and bioses and stuff like that ???
shouldn't actually a win vista reinstall help ?
actually i am even thinking that i'd quite likely sell this laptop and buy an cheap dell with more battery power.. for how much can i sell it?
on the other side i like everything else about it than the battery...

I found out that the latest driver set of Realtek, version 6.0.1.5582, was actually not fully compatible with G1S. So, I decided to revert back to the version 6.0.1.5449.

So, once again, I uninstalled Realtek HD software from Control Panel and then uninstalled Realtek hardware from the Device Manager. Vista detects after a while that there is new hardware in the system. I could not interrupt the automatic driver installation process. However, when this was finished, I updated the driver for HD audio manually by choosing the option "Browse my computer for driver software" and the path where I had unzipped the driver set.

So what do I have now?
    - Realtek driver does not detect plugging/unplugging of the headphones, consquently, no pop up in the system tray
    - The trick of reallynewbie (see http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2637679&postcount=15) and andresthor ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3015951&postcount=39) works: I raise the volume to maximum and then lower it down to minimum and then to normal. After this the speakers work ok.
    - I have to do this trick every time I boot G1S, but since I normally use my headphones instead of the speakers, this is not a big trouble.

Asus seems to be ignorant to this problem. I have sent email to Asus through their official website in Taiwan, where they promise "...ASUS Technical Support Engineers will be responsible in replying your mail within 48 hours on Mon~Fri (except public holiday)". I asked for help on 23 March and so far (29 March) have not got any answer.

Anyway, reinstalling Vista is in my opinion not a good idea.

    Same thing happened to me...

The volume up/down thing works. Here's what i did today...I spoke to an ASUS Technical Support Representative, and they told me to reinstall the drivers, so I completely removed the drivers, and installed the new ones from Realtek...but things were acting weird and the speakers weren't working at all. So, I did a system restore to when the speakers were working with the volume up/down technique. I'm stuck there again. Does anyone know um...or did anyone do a system restore to before the problem occurred? Did it work? It really does not make any sense, it can't possibly be a hardware problem if the speakers WORK when the volume is adjusted.

i have to say.... hooray! (nice rhyme, ain't it?)
i got the sound working! after reinstalling the system, the asus live update app downloaded new audio drivers and when i do the "maximize & minimize" trick, it works!!! i am really happy about hearing some noice from my laptop in vista now! wow

but it would be still nice to figure out how to make it working without having to do the trick...
