I need some advice. My son has a Asus G1-AK024C laptop. The unit started displaying a black screen when he turned it on. He noticed this when he updated to the new vista service pack. Don't know if that did anything or not. Anyway, he took it to Best Buy and they said the LCD screen needed repair. There estitmate was for $1,100.(That's for the screen itself). We obviously did not go for that. What I'd like to know is this. Is this laptop fixable? What would be a fair price for a replacement screen plus labor? Thanks.

$1100 is absolutely ridiculous for a screen replacement.
Depending on the resolution of the screen, the screen costs $215-$266.50 at the Asus estore. A skilled technician should be able to replace a screen within an hour, so I'd say a total of $350-$400 is the most that should be charged for parts & labor.

Another alternative is to contact Asus and ask if they would repair the notebook. I'm almost positive that it would cost less than $1100 for a screen replacement at Asus.

well the screens are relativity cheap at 200-250. but replacing a screen can be a pain. i had a g1sn-x1 it looked kinda easy to do. but if you are worried about DIY stuff you could pay someone to do it. and i have no idea how much someone would charge i depends on how much of a pain it is. BUT if you have the money i suggest getting a new laptop.

You might as well buy another notebook for that amount.

    $1100? Typical Best Buy wow.

If he decides on a new notebook he still may be able to get a decent amount for his current notebook even though the screen isn't working.

$1,100 for a screen is ridiculous, G1-AK024C has NV 7700 GPU, 2GB RAM, 160G HD, T7200 CPU, you can buy something new and much better specs than that.

Hi, so you are saying you think it's only the bad inverter board? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try that if we could find one for $10.00 Thanks

According to our record of repairing the Asus barebone notebooks yes, 100% of time it's inverter board and it happen quite often, the inverter board controls the LCD backlight so when it's defective the screen will turn black, the only time we need to replace LCD itself is because of the screen cracked.

one thought - did you try hooking up an external monitor? Maybe if GenTechPC's still in the thread, he can confirm, but if it runs an external monitor OK, that'd be the simple fix described, but if it's black screen on external monitor also, wouldn't that indicate graphics card issue?

I ask, because I had a similar issue - mine wouldn't drive any external displays, either,. I was told it was a graphics card failure on my G2S (which is manufactured as one unit with the motherboard, I'm told) so I didn't have a good repair option.

(Oh, I should add - the no repair option, and the reason Asus lists these as out of stock, is they've told me they're not making these anymore - at least the G2S, and I think the G1S is the same family, is it not?)

It's really no factor for me, as I already decided to replace the laptop - but if mine WAS something like this that had quick fix potential, I could fix it up to sell it or have a second laptop... :)

He took it to BestBuy and they told him he need a new screen so I assume BB already tested on external monitor and it worked.
