    Hi,

I have an Asus G1 s with the GeForce 8600m GT 256 is it possible to upgrade?

If not can i get it overclocked and is this advisable?

Or any other tips to increase graphic performance?

    Thanks

    A. Not upgradeable.
    B. Yes you can. As to advisable, depends on your experience. Search around for tips, especially check the owner's lounge and the G1S resource thread.

You most likely can't change it, but you can definitely overclock to get better pefromance. As long as you keep a close eye on the temps of the card, then there should not be able problems.

Besides that, there's really not much else to increase the graphic performance short of getting a new machine.

Reduce bloatware and other unneeded processes running. Although I don't know if these sorts of things directly affect the graphics card, they certainly put enough of a drain on the system as a whole to slow things down somewhat.

If you're seriously wanting a better experience, install a clean, bloatware-free Vista or (better still, at least until Vista SP1 is released) XP. I just installed XP sans bloatware and my 3dmark2006 is 5% higher than on Vista in the config the G1S came with! More than that, real life playing of the Crysis demo is definitely smoother at settings I'm happier with too (DX9 1280x1024 or 1280x800 - can't remember which; all high except shadows low, shaders + textures medium).

Of course the quickest, easiest thing to do is to make sure the drivers for the graphics card are some of the later, better ones. 169.28 certainly provides a boost over the drivers that were pre-installed, and there are later drivers out but it's not clear to me whether they provide much of an improvement for the 8600M GT card. Have a look in the graphics/games forum for more help on this, but it seems scattered over many discussions, hence why I don't know which truly are the best drivers for the card we have.

And if you can beg borrow or steal, take the time to get Windows Server 2003 Standard on there, optimize it just about nothing and have fun. I love starting Windows with barely 100mb ram used.

Yeah, but we're moving away from graphics performance.

I second wholeheartedly the advice about cleaning up the bloatware. Check my Vista optimization guide.
