I've never owned a laptop, so I'm not sure if leaving the machine on all the time is a good idea. I always left my desktop on and never had any problems.

The short answer is don't leave a laptop on when you aren't using it.

The long answer is Unless your laptop won't turn back on afterwards (like mine) don't leave a laptop on when you aren't using it.

Yeap, if you aren't using, it turn it off or put it in hibernate. In saying that, my v6 has been seeding and a FileServer on IRC for the past 16~ months overnight - I shut it down about once or twice a month, but it goes into hibernation if I need to move it around.

They have always said the major stress to electronic components comes from when you turn them off and on. This is true.

Leaving a machine on 24/7 wont hurt it. no electrical surges this way. Computers tho have hybernate and sleep features for a reason tho :p

Investing in a notebook cooler and cans of compressed air are good ideas, so the notebook can maintain a cool temperature.

That is like saying it is better to leave your car on all night because it takes the most gas to start it up.

No that would be comparing fuel use to computer stress.

The more correct answer would be like saying its better to leave a car on all night because it causes the most engine wear when you start it up... hey guess what thats true aswell. When all those things go from cold to hot thats when they get worn the most and also thats when all the electric parts on the car take the most wear. My whole family are mechanics so I belive them. (this is why your supposed to let the car idle and warm up before you drive it on a cold day aswell)

My expertise is in electronics tho, I had to go thru 4 years worth of college on this stuff and when a cap gets charged or discharged, when a electrical surge goes thru a circute... this is when the life gets shortened. In a always on state electrical components last much longer.

All my household electronic devices that have ever died on me always happened during a rain storm it seems like when the power surges go thru the house. My VCR died and had a TV die. And a few other things... Always when the power was going on and off and surges were present.

Its also documented that its bad for PC's top be on the same fuse or breaker line as your major home appliances like a washer/dryer or a refridgrator due to the power surges they send when they go off and on.

Back to your car & gas thing. the gas for a computer is the electricity electricty is not neary as expensive as gas... and computers have low power modes.

So the only thing that will wear faster on a notebook is the fans if they are always on, and fans are cheap. I just replaced my first one on my desktop (the chipset fan wich was already known to suck) and that machine has been on 24/7 for 2 years now.

In perfect conditions an electronic part will last longer in an always on position. In the real world constant exposure to heat and the MTBF comes into play. This is basically because the parts that aren't effected by electrical surges are more likely to fail because mechanical parts are less efficient than electronic parts. The more you run a mechanical part the more likely it is to fail. Most HDDs shut off after a little while, but they turn on and off for random things once and a while.

I have alway left my laptop on for 24/7, I do set the screen and HD to turn off after a certain interval when it's not being use. I use hibernate when I move it around office to home. The only time I turn it off or reboot it is when I need to take it on trips and doing updates that requires a reboot.

Right, but where ist he heat when your not using it?? todays notebooks have power save modes that undervolt the cpu and the gpu isnt in use... the heat is so minimal it wont hurt the stuff. Its not at the base of a volcano. Because it may feel warm to you, as a human being used to your a/c room and stuff. Electronis live in a much hotter enviroment shut off temps for them are really high like over 100 degrees celcious. Sitting on low power mode basking in a warm air not much hotter than your ambient is not going to cause them any harm, Id put my life on the line to back this up. They are made of metal and other varous components not organic material like you are.

Seriously, this is all tried and true.
