    Hi everyone.
I have a really important project due next week and I've been working on it forever (magazine layout)! This morning, after I turned on my laptop, it just gives me a blank screen telling me that the selected boot device is not present. I restarted it, and it happened again. I went into the setup and changed the priority so that the HDD was first and it still telling me to choose another boot device. After restarting it a few more times, it just gives me a white cursor on the top left of the screen.

This is really freaking me out. Does anyone know what the problem is?
The specs of my system before it died were:

    2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo
    160 GB HDD
    4 GB of ram
    Windows 7 64 bit
    128 mb nVidia GeForce 8400m G

Please! Any help will me appreciated!

First: Is the HDD showing up in the BIOS?

If it isn't, take the cover off the bottom that covers it and reseat the HDD in your laptop (you may have to remove a couple screws to do this). Go back into the BIOS and see if you can see it. If it's still not showing up, it's time to either put it into a external HDD caddy or in another system to see if you can see it that way.

If it does show up, you have a few options (this is by no means all of them but some of the easier): You can still take it out as I mentioned above or you can boot from a live CD. Some suggestions and personal favorites:

    and the FAQ for it:

Another great one is using a linux live CD.

If you can use the live CD's, you may be able to see the HDD once you get into them and back up your project on a USB flash drive or burn it to a CD/DVD. This will at least allow you save your project.

Remember, it's ALWAYS a good idea to back up anything that you want saved on a computer. It's times like this (if you unfortunately end up losing your stuff) that teach you a valuable lesson!

    Good Luck!
